Dr. Burke's Message

In cased you missed it, our Equity Team produced another amazing video for our last AACPS Equity Day--the two hour early dismissal. The video can be found on our school YouTube channel. The videos are always fun and engaging, but they represent a larger meaning associated with these dedicated Equity Days. In addition to the videos, students have participated in cross-grade activities that emphasized our school-wide theme: Better Together! Students engaged in team-building, empathy, anti-bullying and especially kindness.

We are continuing our focus on Better Together and kindness this month, and are looking forward to our final Equity Day in March. This month, we are going to be talking to students about ways to show kindness throughout the school community--the cafeteria, the playground, in class, and leaving school.

Watch for more information about our final Equity Day activities on March 24!

Stop the Spread of Germs

Our students' health is a priority! During winter months when flu and other viruses are prevalent, our custodial team takes extra precautions to clean and disinfect. This includes wiping surfaces such as desks and doorknobs frequently. All classrooms and many public areas in the school (including the cafeteria) have hand sanitizer readily available. Students are always permitted to wash hands if they request. Mrs. Bellotte, our school nurse, has done hand-washing lessons in many grades and teachers frequently remind students about healthy habits. The CDC has reported that alcohol-based hand sanitizer kills most of the bad germs that make you sick and is the preferred way to clean hands in healthcare settings. See the graphic for ways to prevent the spread of illnesses.

Arrival Times and Tardiness

We want to remind families that the school day begins at 9:00 and students that arrive (enter school) after that time will be marked tardy. This is marked by a bell that is synced with our atomic clocks in the building. In the past, Dr. Burke told parents that if the line is very long and that prevents students from getting to school on time, students would not be marked tardy. The good news this year is that the line has not been extremely long as we get closer to 9:00.

To ensure consistency and fairness, all students who are not inside the building at 9:00 when the bell rings will be marked tardy. Thank you for your understanding and support.

Thank you to all who follow these guidelines to ensure that the cars move along! To make the car loop move quickly and safely, please follow these guidelines:

  • Pull up as far as you can.
  • Stay in your car!
  • Do not leave your car unattended or running in the car loop!
  • Wait until all students have been lined up--don't pull them out of line before they get to the car loop.

Arrival & Dismissal

Thank you for your help in keeping our students safe during arrival and dismissal!

  • The doors open at 8:45 AM and instruction begins for students at 9:00 AM.
  • Students may not arrive before 8:45AM. There is no supervision prior to that time.
  • Only bus riders enter through the lobby.
  • All other students enter through the doors by the kindergarten entrance.
  • Walkers assemble on the blacktop behind school and enter when directed by the teacher on duty.
  • Car riders exit their cars and may enter the building directly.

  • Keep dismissal changes to a minimum. They are confusing!
  • Students who are walkers must leave school property at dismissal. Do not arrange to meet your child anywhere on school property except the WALKER door.
  • We STRONGLY DISCOURAGE meeting your children at an off-school location, like a path to a neighborhood. If you are delayed, your child will not know and no one at school will know that they possibly needs assistance.
  • Students may never walk in the parking lot alone. Do not tell your child to meet you in the parking lot.
  • Pick students up in the designated location. If you are walking, the pick up is on the blacktop at the back of the school, not near the car loop.
