Success in Sixth Grade

A Note from Mr. Nakano
"Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible." - Dalai Lama
"Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the single candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared." - Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai
Hard to believe that we're already here in our final trimester! It never fails to amaze me how well this group of collective learners support each other and push one another to succeed to their best. We're definitely not slowing down and I'm looking forward to continually seeing the amazing things they produce.
Sqord March Madness!
After our Q&A presentation with the members of the board from Hoag, who provided us with the devices, the students were determined to succeed. After a narrow (0.07%) victory over King-Chavez Arts and Athletics Academy in San Diego, we went on to later defeat Silver Firs Elementary in Everett, Washington.
Our current week has us up against Jefferson Elementary in Spokane, Washington. If we succeed (the round ends on Monday), we'll be moving on to the finals against either Sherwood Elementary from Edmonds, Washington or Park Orchard Elementary in Kent, Washington.
Be sure to stay active over Spring Break wearing your Sqord devices and sync them every day using the app.
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sqord/id920571238
http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smashingboxes.sqordmobile
Each day you sync earns you an extra 7,000 activity points. If you're unable to sync over the break, you'll be able to sync your device (it keeps the last 7 calendar days worth of data) on the Monday we return from break.
Panoramic Picture
The 6th graders will be taking a group panoramic picture; a nice commemorative memory of their final year at Canyon View.
Your student is asked to wear their blue "CV 17" t-shirt for the picture. The 17 sweatshirts are not recommended, as the numbers aren’t visible from the front.
Yesterday, we sent home a pink Panoramic Picture envelope. If you would like to order pictures please send the envelope to school on Thursday, the 13th with your student.

Sierra Vista Middle School Visitation
The students will be visiting Sierra Vista Middle School the Friday we return from Spring Break. They will be treated to musical performances from the award-winning band and orchestra, be introduced to their elective choices, take a tour of the school and do a Q&A with teachers and student leaders.
We are asking that you and your family make arrangements to have your child dropped off at Sierra Vista Middle School at 7:45 on the morning of the field trip.
After the program, we will be walking back to school at 10:00. We encourage you to make carpool arrangements to alleviate parking lot congestion, as well as help out families who are unable to drop their kids off in the morning.
We want to ensure that all students are able to participate so, please let us know if your child is unable to find a ride to Sierra Vista. We will make arrangements so all students can be there.
If you child plans to go to Jeffery Trail Middle school, we still expect them to join us, as they will get a chance to see a middle school experience and ask questions to middle school teachers and student leaders.

The Westing Game
Copies of The Westing Game will be provided to each student. However, if they would like to write in their book (besides using Post-Its), they will need to provide their own copy. To save time (and money), we are placing a group order if your child is interested. The book will be $4 (paperback) or $6 if they would like a magnifying glass necklace to use as a bookmark as they read along.
Science
We have learned about the three types of volcanoes, how they form, and the various types of destruction (deforestation, asthma, etc.) they cause.
