Havelock North Primary School 13th April 2021

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Kia ora koutou,

Thank you all for your support during what has been another busy and successful term. I would also like to thank our wider staff for their commitment and dedication. With the school and community working together, we can achieve a lot for our children.

ANZAC Day falls in the holidays as you will know. Our Cultural Leaders will represent us at the service at the Havelock North Cenotaph on Sunday 25th April from 9:00 am. If your children would like to join them that would be great. We ask that they wear school uniform and stand behind the cultural leaders as they lay the school wreath. Thank you to Mrs Cameron for coordinating this.

There will be no "normal" school assembly on Friday morning. Instead we will have our termly values assembly at 2:15 pm on Friday afternoon. Assemblies will revert to 2 pm on Friday afternoons in Term 2 & 3. The reason for this is that we like to have our assemblies outside and mornings are too cold in the winter season.

Well done to our chess players who took part in the Flaxmere Chess Tournament on Friday. A special well done to Ariez Bellamy and Dario Rotondo who took out 2nd and 3rd place respectively. Thank you to Mr Bain for coordinating this event and the wonderful adults who helped out with transport and supervision.

Welcome to our new student, Nixon Carroll, who has started at HNPS this week.

Thank you and enjoy the break everyone.

Ngā mihi

Key Roles for the Home & School include:

· Developing a positive relationship between both home & school environments.

· Liaison with Board of Trustees and supporting the school’s Vision and Strategy.

· Assist in running and selling the school uniform shop for new and second hand HNP and second hand for HNI uniforms.

· Fundraising in order to provide our children with facilities, resources and activities that are otherwise not provided.

· Help facilitate wider education in the community.

Fundraising

We are proud of how generous our school community is when it comes to fundraising through our events such as Blast in the Park, Peak Trail Blazer, Big Night Out, calendar art, sushi Fridays and other ad hoc events like Picnic Cinema, portrait fundraising. It takes a lot of work to organise each fundraiser so we always aim to have a different ‘team’ on each activity and to vary the types of events. New sub-team members are always welcome to help with the above – you don’t need to come to the committee meetings!

Why fundraise? HNPS is a high decile school and therefore is funded at a lower rate per child than most other schools. The decile model expects the school’s own community to provide more financial support and Home & School fundraising helps to fulfil this expectation.

Each year we have a larger project to aim for, in conjunction with Board discussions, along with smaller ticket items. These are examples of what the school community has asked us to fund in the last few years:

$24,000 for shade sails and seating, $70,000 towards the senior playground, $35,000 towards the hall alterations, $10,000 towards the netball court resurfacing. Other smaller items have been sports equipment, cultural uniforms, classroom blinds, landscaping, arts projects, chess sets and robotics.

HNP - Zero Waste Warriors

The HNP Zero Waste Warriors are on the warpath. At HNP we want to make a positive difference to our environment. This term we have been analysing waste audits and thinking about how we can reduce what we put into the landfill.

Here are some positive differences we are making already-

  • All classes are collecting organic waste for our worm farm.

  • We are looking at extending our composting capabilities. (We’d love another fruit bin for this venture if you know of one).

  • The Year 3’s are using old T shirts to weave into cushions.

  • Ms Washington is collecting bread bags for another creative project - watch this space!

  • Jasper from Year 2 has organised for all classes to collect milk bottle tops and bread bag clips which he then takes to the environmental centre for recycling.

  • Year 6 students performed a skit in assembly promoting responsible rubbish reduction.

  • Zero Waste Warriors have designed clear labelling for our rubbish bins. Well done Saraya - Y6, on your winning design.

  • We are currently auditing our plastic waste and looking at ways to reduce our output.

Upcycling

Room 6 kids collect T-shirts from the Presbyterian Opportunity Shop to weave and upcycle into cushions using hoops. Here they are gifting the ladies a cushion mat made from T-shirts during their Discovery Learning sessions at school. Upcycling and reusing is an important part of learning in Year 3.
