Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

As we begin our placement process for the coming 2019-2020 school year, we want you to know that we value your input and will take it into consideration over the next month as the teachers and administrators work through this process. The following form will allow you to share your perspective with your child's current team of teachers. 2019 FSS Placement Process Parent Input Form

Please know that this form is optional. Our teachers have worked hard to get to know your child as a learner and school citizen and are confident that they can create well-balanced classrooms for the coming school year with the many data points they have collected. If there are other elements you would have us take into account, please do so before Monday, May 6.

Thank you in advance for understanding that we will not be considering any correspondence indicating specific teacher requests. Please contact me directly with any questions.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, May 1 is our Spring Walk to School Day from the Bolton Town Common. Mrs. Angulo has reflectors and bookmarks for walkers. Chief Nelson and the Bolton Police will be on hand to help us navigate the crossing of Main Street. Ms. Gurley will be hosting an unscheduled Runners' Club as well. It is always helpful if we have an idea in advance how many students we might have for these events. Please find the following link for more details and to pre-register. May 1 Spring Walk to School Day

This Friday, May 3 will be designated as FSS Bruins Spirit Day! It was brought to my attention by kindergartner and staunch Bruins fan Vince Biagini that while we have held spirit days for other local teams the Bruins have not gotten their due. Students and adults are encouraged to wear Bruins gear and or gold and black. As always, participation is completely voluntary.

Next Sunday, May 5 begins the month of Ramadan observed by our Muslim families. Observers of Ramadan fast from dawn to dusk and, as such, may be more comfortable away from the cafeterias. For this reason, FSS Librarian Mike Caligiuri will make the library available for this purpose. Students observing Ramadan in the Emerson Wing will have alternative space identified as well if they need or want it.

MCAS testing resumes this week with grades three, four, six and seven taking the first session of the mathematics tests listed in the "Looking Ahead" section below. Please find the link to the complete schedule for MCAS testing. 2019 FSS MCAS Schedule

This Saturday, May 4, marks the 21st Children's Day Fair. For more information, please see the following flyer. 2019 NRSD Children's Day Fair

"Jump Rope for Heart for grades 1-4 will take place May 13-17 in one PE class. Information and envelopes will be given out this week or next week in PE classes. The information is also available in the Virtual Backpack." Information and Volunteer form

Relay for Life “Suns” and “moons” will be available for purchase in the cafeteria at lunch through May 17. Profits from the suns and moons will go to the Nashoba Relay for Life which is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Moons are one dollar, and stars are five and they will be displayed in the cafeteria. Thank you for your support!

In closing, please find the flyer from our Student Council with events for the 25th anniversary Student Council Barbeque Dance on May 10. Tickets for the barbeque are on sale this week only.

Yours in partnership,

Joel Bates,

Health Notes

Health Office Updates

Hand Sanitizer Wall Dispensers have been installed around the Sawyer and Emerson Wings for students, staff, and parents, including just outside both main offices, to help prevent the spread of germs. As always, hand washing is the best way to prevent the spread of germs, so we ask you to please remind your children to do this as often as they can throughout their day.

The FSS Health Offices work hard to provide high-quality service for all students. Please find the following forms and informational links.

Stressed Out Students, Understanding the Impact of Anxiety on Motivation and Learning

Tuesday, May 21st, 7pm

403 Great Road

Stow, MA

Today’s children and teens are experiencing more stress and anxiety than ever before, which is concerning due to the detrimental impact that anxiety can have on academic, social, and daily life. In this workshop, we will address:

♦ What is the difference between stress and anxiety, and what does anxiety look like?

♦ How does anxiety function and connect with attention and executive function?

♦ How does anxiety impact motivation?

♦ What are some general strategies for supporting these needs in students?

There will be some time for specific questions from the audience. Dr. Angela Currie is a pediatric neuropsychologist at NESCA in Londonderry, NH and Newton, MA, where she conducts neuropsychological and psychological evaluations. She enjoys working with stressed-out children and teens, working to tease apart the various factors that may be lending to their stress, such as underlying learning, attentional, or emotional challenges. Dr. Currie particularly enjoys working with the seemingly “unmotivated” child, as well as children who have “flown under the radar” for years due to their desire to succeed. This event will be broadcast by Stow TV. A recording will be available following the presentation. Sponsored by Nashoba SEPAC
