Advertising Genius!

Several students in Ms. Ormiston's third grade created a cereal commercial to advertise a product they created. Local advertising agencies should take notice. Nike Horvath, Simon Evans' and Sofia Davison-Gauss are featured below. Great job using technology and creativity to capture our attention.

Fuzzy Yum Yum created by Sofia Davison-Gauss

This cereal will fill you with a ton of energy. It is filled with biolene and made from toasted coconut, marshmallow, and chocolate waivers. Scoop it up for a real good treat!

Third Grade visits with Scotia Glenville Museum

Third graders attended a presentation entitled "Culture Pie" presented by the Scotia Glenville Children's Museum. The presentation showcased different parts of the Afghani culture. Our students listened to stories, observed different artifacts and dressed up as children from Afghanistan!

Elementary Fever hits JHE!

The staff and students came together to support learning and create confidence in every student's ability to Dream it! Believe it! and Achieve it! Special thanks to our bus drivers, cafeteria, custodial, central office and the entire JHE staff for showing their support. In addition, we thank Coach K for creating the video and Mrs. Britten for directing the video.

Confetti Girl

Written by Diana Lopez

Published in New York, NY by Little, Brown,2009

Imagine, a young girl whose mother has died and has a bookworm for a father. Her father would even bring a book to her volleyball games or get up up from the dinner table to find one. Lina feels less important than books.

Luckily Lina has a best friend named Vanessa who helps her get through the hard times, like with her crush Luis or boys on the football team bugging her because she is tall.

Lina is a sock enthusiast. She sorts her socks by daily socks, holey socks, lonely socks, and sock heaven. Lina says “people who think socks are just for feet have no imagination.” She uses holey socks for science experiments and lonely socks to make scarves.

Vanessa and Lina made cascarones (confetti filled eggs) for a school carnival. The instructions are in the book so you can make them yourselves and they seem really fun to make.

If you want to find out more about Lina and Vanessa’s adventures or what happens with both of their crushes, read Confetti Girl by Diana Lopez.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children

Written by Ransom Riggs

Reviewed by Emma Jordan

Published in Philadelphia, PA by Quirk Books, 2011

369 pages

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs is all about a boy named Jacob who tries to put together the pieces of his grandfather’s legacy after a mysterious tragedy occurs. This tragedy causes Jacob’s boring life to turn upside-down. The only clues Jacob has are some peculiar pictures and his grandfather’s peculiar words. In the end will Jacob unlock the secrets of his grandfather’s past or will they remain a secret forever? Find out when you read Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.

When Abraham Portman begins to hear strange things, everyone thinks that Abraham has gone crazy. But when he dies, Jacob takes his last words very seriously. He travels to Wales to find out why his grandfather acted so peculiarly. Jacob has his mind set on figuring out his grandfather’s past, but Jacob’s dad is watching him very closely.

This is a well-written book that uses photographs to show the peculiarities of the children, and if you enjoy a fantasy, then you will love this book. Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is a unique book and you have never read anything like it. I would give the book a 5-star rating.

I don't see any downsides to Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and it gets my thumbs-up. I would suggest this book for teens and young adults. Prepare to be taken on an adventure by Jacob and his friends. But be careful, once you start reading the book, you can't stop.
