School Attendance Announcement
Harmony Public Schools realize the importance of school attendance. We look forward to working with you to educate your child during the 2015-16 school year. HPS Administrators have revised attendance procedures to increase communication and provide assistance to students who are struggling with excessive unexcused absences. This letter serves to keep you informed of important changes beginning this school year in regards to school attendance. The 84th Texas Legislature recently passed House Bill 2398, which altered existing truancy laws in the state of Texas. With the passage of the new law, former provisions that criminalized a student’s truant behavior have been repealed and a new civil process governing truancy proceedings takes effect this school year. This change means truancy proceedings against students will now be handled in a civil court. The School is required to provide a written warning to parents at the beginning of the school year informing them that if the student is absent from school on 10 or more days or parts of days within a six-month period in the same school year, that the parent/guardian may be subject to criminal prosecution and, as mentioned, the student is subject to referral to a truancy court for truant conduct. HPS will enforce the Texas compulsory attendance laws as follows:
* Phone calls will be placed to parents or guardians notifying them when a student has been marked as absent. It is the parent’s or guardian’s responsibility to ensure that he/she provides current and up to date contact information to the school.
* Students have 3 days to provide a note of excuse upon their return to school. Please read Student/Parent Handbook page 13 regarding the list of excused and unexcused absences.
* All students will be issued a warning notice when attendance records reflect that the student has absences without an excuse on three days or parts of days in a four week period or five or more days or parts of days during the school year. Further, each campus will request a conference with the student and parent or guardian for the purpose of addressing truancy prevention measures for students who exhibit attendance issues in order to improve the student’s overall attendance.
* After a student has five or more days or parts of days during the school year, parents – and students, if older than 12 – will be required to attend the School’s Truancy Prevention Measures (TPM). The TPM is an intervention program offered to parents and students as a preventative measure to intervene 1) before students receive a referral to truancy court; and 2) to educate parents or guardians and students who are experiencing truancy problems about the consequences associated with unexcused absences.
* If a student fails to attend school without an excuse on 10 or more days or parts of days within a six month period in the same school year and those absences have been verified by the campus as unexcused, students 12 and older may be referred to the prosecutor of the truancy court. At this point, the court could also file a criminal complaint against parents who contribute to the nonattendance of their child, regardless of their child’s age.
Please refer to the HPS 2015-2016 Student/Parent Handbook for additional information, or contact Brittany Woodard, HPS Truancy Prevention Facilitator at 713-343-3333, ext. 2511 or via email at bwoodard@harmonytx.org. We encourage our students to attend school on a regular basis to achieve academic success.
Sincerely, Maksat Altiyev Principal

Nurse's Corner
As we all know summer is coming to an end, and with that being said flu season is right around the corner. The following are important tips that can help us stay healthy:
Hand Washing
· Before, during, and after preparing food
· Before eating food
· Before and after caring for someone who is sick
· After using the toilet
· After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet
· After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
· After touching an animal, or animal waste
· After touching garbage
Handwashing is easy to do and it's one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of many types of infection and illness
Cover your mouth and nose
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
WORKING TOGETHER WE CAN TRY AND KEEP EACH OTHER HEALTHY
