NORTHWESTERN MEDICINE WAKE UP CALL BACKPACK - PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT, 1/24, 6:00-7:30 PM
Compass Academy is partnering with Northwestern Medicine to offer a preventative parent education program called Wake up Call Backpack. This program is targeted to any adult (parents, teachers, coaches, etc.) who support a teen in their life.
The goal is to educate these adults on current trends in vaping and other substance use concerns. Additional topics include signs and symptoms of substance use, and how to identify drug paraphernalia that is made to be concealed or disguised as something else.
Often parents disregard courses like these, assuming these issues don't impact their student. The reality is that substances are prevalent in all teen communities, and the more adults are educated, the more they are empowered to support students in our community either through education or intervention.
We really hope you can join us for this special program. Please let us know you plan to attend by filling out THIS FORM.
COMPASS CARES SERVICE PROJECT - LAZARUS HOUSE
Compass Academy will be participating monthly in making lunches for Lazarus House during the 2nd semester. Compass students and families can get involved either through donating grocery items for the lunches, or attending lunch packing events at Compass on a Wednesday. Keep your eye out for future announcements in Compass Connections for other volunteer events.
Our first lunch packing event will be January 25th at 9:30 a.m. in the culinary room at Compass. Students and families interested in donating items or helping hands can sign up via this link. Donated items can be dropped off in the culinary room (143) on school days on or before January 24th as students arrive at school between 9:15-9:30 a.m.

CITY OF ST. CHARLES JOB SHADOWING- A CHANCE TO LEARN ABOUT CAREERS AND EARN CREDIT!
Many Compass Academy students have already begun participating in job shadowing through this program, but we are hoping that even more students will participate in this fantastic opportunity throughout the year. In the city's career pathway job shadow program, Compass students can shadow people in many career fields, including engineering, communications, accounting, firefighting, government, law enforcement, construction, forestry, water management, and vehicle maintenance. Students who participate in job shadowing on Wednesdays, and then write reflections about their experiences, have the opportunity to earn credit for career exploration.
Interested students should print and complete the Registration Form and return it to Ms. Ohlson at Compass Academy. Students may also receive a paper copy of this form from Ms. Ohlson in her office.

STUDENT WORK PUBLISHED IN TEEN INK
According to the Teen Ink website, "Teen Ink, founded in 1989, is a unique and far-reaching reading, communications, and writing experience for teenagers. Teen Ink, the organization's bi-monthly digital magazine, reaches hundreds of thousands of students in public and private high schools and middle schools around the world. Teen Ink also maintains an online version with daily features to allow additional teens an opportunity to be published." Pieces are chosen by the editorial board based in part on quality of writing, voice, and clarity. Because the writing is by teens for teens, work that is selected must be appropriate for a teen audience.
