Salmon in the Classroom - Released!
Our 10th annual Beck Centennial Salmon in the Classroom “Salmon Release” took place this past Tuesday on the banks of the Clinton River. A healthy gathering of 6th graders “schooled” around the release area awaiting their turn to set free the young salmon. This group of students, including those who comprised the Salmon in the Classroom Water Quality Team, participated in the release of 42 Chinook (King) Salmon “smolts” (think young salmon in the
3”-4” range) as part of the Michigan Department of Natural Resource’s Salmon in the Classroom program. The students on the Water Quality Team were responsible for weekly testing and recording of important water quality data, including pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels, as well as the overall health of the fish. The goal of the program is to provide students with an educational opportunity to learn about natural resource conservation, and witness first-hand the life cycle of the Chinook Salmon from eyed-eggs to smolt. When the release was
“fin-ished”, the students sighed and considered the well-being of each of the salmon as they make their journey through life. One student even gave a message of encouragement to the young salmon,” I hope you stay in …school!”

Safety remains a priority in Utica Community Schools.
On May 2, Utica Community Schools will be holding a special election that will allow voters to consider the district’s Safety and Success proposals. Our schools remain the centerpiece of the community, and we are proud that many of our school facilities are used to support the voting process. During these elections, school facilities need to be open and easily accessible to allow voters to cast their ballots.
As has been the practice of UCS for past elections, there will be no school on May 2. The cancellation of school maintains our commitment to safety and allows our facilities to be open for community members to cast their ballots in this important election. This will also provide an opportunity for professional development opportunities for staff.
