Franke Updates
Mrs. Franke's 5th Grade Class
January 2017
Academics
We have completed our first round of book clubs. The students did a good job of having deep-level conversations about their literature and started to work on analytical and critical thinking in their write-longs. For the rest of quarter 2, we will continue to practice this deep thinking in our write-longs on our independent reading books.
Writer's Workshop
The students have started working on their final and independent persuasive/opinion paper. The students got to decide what they would like to write about. We have a wide variety of topics and we are excited to see their growth in this genre of writing.
Math
We have started looking at polygons: classifying triangles and quadrilaterals. The students will next be working on measuring and drawing angles using a protractor.
Science
We have started our matter and chemistry unit. Most of the homework that goes along with this unit is found on Discovery Education on assignment boards that have been posted to your child's account. Along with educational videos, the students need to do some reading in their book to ready them for the next day's activities. Throughout this unit, we will be working with an experiment called "Mystery Powders" in which the students will need to decide what powders are mixed together in the end.
Extras
We will be doing our mid-year MAPS testing on Thursday 1/12 (Reading) at 12:45 and Wednesday 1/18 (Math) at 12:45. Please try to schedule appointments around these times.
Spelling Bee
We will be having our classroom Spelling Bee On January 11th. The winners of our classroom bee will participate in the school-wide bee on January 19th.
PBIS Sledding and Hot Chocolate in the Classroom
On January 16th (or Jan 24th -pending snow on the ground) we are enjoying a PBIS celebration by going sledding and having hot chocolate in our classroom! The students have been working very hard this quarter to earn compliments from other staff members during school. Please help us out by volunteering either materials or your time on this day.
