The Battle of Hastings
Mr.Payne's Social Studies class
The Battle of Hastings was fought on October 14, 1066. The battle was between the Norman-French army of Duke William II and an English army lead by Harold Godwinson. Duke William the II, who later became known as William the Conqueror, defeated the Anglo-Saxons and was in fact the victorious one of this gruesome battle. After William's victory at the Battle of Hastings he moved on to London and received the city's submission. He was crowned the first Norman king of England on Christmas day. When William became king the of England the Anglo-Saxon phase of English history came to an end.
