Take a Taste Tuesday
This week we celebrated the letter M with Mrs.Venkatesh’s class trying Mandarin Oranges. Mandarin oranges are a smaller, sweeter version of an orange and they have thin skin which makes them easy to peel. We sometimes recognize them by the brand name “Cuties.”Like all citrus fruits, Mandarin Oranges are a great source of vitamin C. Today we learned that some fruits and vegetables can be canned or frozen. Even though fresh foods have the best nutrition, modern methods of canning and freezing help to preserve nutrition. It is important to be a health conscious consumer when it comes to reading labels. At the grocery store Miss Grace found Mandarin Oranges that were packed in heavy syrup and light syrup – both added a lot of sugar to the fruit. She also found Mandarin Oranges packed in water with no added sugar. Now that is the healthier choice. Become a label reader so that you can watch for added ingredients that you really don’t need in order to enjoy the foods you buy.
Friendly Reminders -
Ski Plano is the largest fundraising event that the Plano ISD Education Foundation hosts in our school community. This action-packed, ski-themed event benefits the more than 60,000 students and staff of Plano ISD. For tickets or sponsorships or if you have any questions or would like additional information, please visit www.skiplano.org or contact the Foundation Office at 469-752-8272.
As we move into the 2nd school semester, we encourage you to help us teach your child independence by limiting the number of times you join him/her for lunch.
During the school day, we are working diligently to create an instructionally sound environment with minimal distractions for all students. We understand that you have items or messages that you might need to get to your student during the day. However, we actually encourage you not to bring up items such as homework, lunches and water bottles that may have been left at home as we work together to build responsibility and resilience in all Carlisle Coyotes.
The school front doors open at 7:00 a.m. Students must arrive before 7:45 a.m. as classroom instruction begins promptly. Student pick up is at 2:45 p.m. Please make sure your child knows their plans on how they are getting home. If your child has a change in departure plans, please notify the office BEFORE 2:00 p.m. to insure your child receives the message. Notes are picked up from the bins at 2:15. Also, if it is necessary to pick your child up from school early, please arrive before 2:30. No student will be called down after 2:30 for early dismissal. Thank you for your cooperation.
The front office opens at 7:00 a.m. and closes at 3:30 p.m. each day. Entrance into the building after 3:30 will not be permitted unless you have an appointment.

Nurses' News
Head Lice-Head’s Up
Head lice can be quite a nuisance. In the first weeks of school we often see cases that are related to summer activities such as camps and sleep overs with friends. Unfortunately head lice is a 12 month a year problem. Most cases can be tied to contacts outside of school including neighborhood friends, sports teams and clubs. However, many of those contacts also attend the same school so it quickly becomes a school issue as well.
A few years ago, the state of Texas revised the school exclusion criteria for lice. Evidence has shown that most cases of head lice identified at school have actually been present for several weeks before they are discovered. Therefore, students are not excluded from school the moment they are discovered. Students are permitted to stay until the end of the day. Parents are contacted and are welcome to pick up early if they can. Sometimes, subtle measures are taken such as having the student tie up long hair. It is expected that the student has a lice treatment that day and returns to school the next morning. The student is readmitted after an examination by the school nurse. If no live lice are found, the student is returned to class. In the week or so following the treatment, parents are asked to use a fine toothed comb to continue to comb out the nits (eggs). Most lice products recommend treating the head again in 7-10 days. Continued removal of all eggs is the best way to prevent a recurrence.
There are some basic steps that can be taken at home to help eradicate the problem. Here is the link to the PISD head lice information that may help:http://www.pisd.edu/parents/health/documents/5.LiceTreatmentGuideforParents.pdf
There are many different kinds of lice products available over the counter and there are services that will treat your child for a fee. There are even prescription treatments that can be used in cases where the situation recurs.
It helps when parents contact the school nurse if they have found head lice on their child. We track trends and try to follow up on known contacts. Teachers are very vigilant about noticing kids with itchy heads. The school nurse is an expert on the life cycle and treatment of head lice. She can also provide moral support! We try to maintain privacy when children have head lice, however, it is very important to be open with your child’s close contacts so that they can be checked as well.
We do wish that we could remove the “Ick” factor around head lice but it seems that most of us will always say “EEK” when we discover head lice. On the other hand, if we are open about the problem, perhaps some of the stigma would be removed. Please contact Miss Grace with any questions you have. Even a late evening e-mail question will be returned ASAP. Hoping your family has a lice free year.
