FREE BOOKS!!!!
40,000 FREE BOOKS for Bronx area kids
TOMORROW, Saturday, October 15th!
Great news! The AFT and UFT are partnering with First Book to bring a truckload of 40,000 brand new, FREE books to children in the Bronx, NY. As a member of the First Book Network, you're invited to select and pick up FREE books for the children you serve. We have brand new books for all kids, from age 0-18!
What do I need to do?
Just show up! You are already a member of the First Book network, so you're all set. Please note the event information and important details below so you'll know where to go and what to bring with you.
When: Saturday, October 15, 2016
from 11:00am until the last book finds a home!

Important details:
Books are available on a first come, first served basis, so arrive early!
Each member of the First Book network will be able to select 50 books to take home (as long as books last). Families will be able to select 15 books to take home.
Please bring your own boxes, baskets, rolling suitcases, or bags for your books. They are heavier than you may think!
All educators and program staff receiving books must be registered with First Book. One person can pick up books for registered staff from their school, program, or facility.
These books are being brought to the Bronx thanks to a partnership among the American Federation of Teachers, the United Federation of Teachers and First Book.
Thank you for all of the work you do to support the kids in your community, and for helping to bring 40,000 brand new books to Bronx kids.

CLASSROOM GRANT OPPORTUNITY
The Fund for Public Schools is pleased to announce the “Books for Fun” Improving Literacy in the Classroom Grant Program, which seeks to build, expand, and improve classroom book options for pre k to 8th grade students in NYC public schools as a key strategy for closing the achievement gap. In each selected classroom, this grant will allow teachers to purchase books to support the curriculum or increase the classroom collection choices.
Goal of the “Books for Fun” Improving Literacy in the Classroom Grant Program
- Support literacy and reading in all classrooms and subject areas
- Provide students with access to more books
- Increase pleasure reading
Eligibility Criteria
To apply, each school must possess all of the following characteristics:
- Be a New York City Public School
- At least 75% of school students are eligible to receive free lunch
- Support the needs of a pre k – 8th Grade Classroom Teacher
- Demonstrate a clear purpose in your decision in book choices to support curriculum or classroom collection
- Complete an evaluation form at the end of the school year
