Principal's Message
Dear Maureen M. Welch Elementary Families,
This school year has certainly seen its challenges. Know that during these trying times the MMW school community is dedicated to the respect and dignity of all of our members. We will continue to teach and advocate for these core values, as we foster an environment where our students can learn and grow. The richness in our diversity makes us a stronger community. As a whole, we are greater than the sum of our parts.
Though we are apart, we continue to support you as these difficult conversations arise. This is an opportunity for students to ask questions and express concerns. Pleases feel free to reach out to any of us. Dr. Fraser, in his letter, provided a resource from the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture . In addition, Mrs. Jachimski, our guidance counselor is available to assist.
As we bring this school year to a close, it is a good time to reflect on how well our school community came together to provide distance learning. The teachers were remarkable in their flexibility and response to overnight change. Your work at home has been appreciated! While distance learning has not been easy nor perfect, we made it work. Thank you for your continued support.
This will be the last newsletter for this school year! Stay tuned for news during the summer for Back to School News.
Wishing all of you a safe and restful summer! Rebecca
Last School Days
The last day of “new” learning for K-11 students will be Tuesday, June 9th. This means that next Tuesday will be the final day that new learning activities will be posted by the teachers.
However, the final student day is Tuesday, June 16th.
On June 10th-12th and 15th-16th, the students will be encouraged to submit any distance learning assignments that they have yet to complete. In addition, the teachers may be planning special activities with the children on these final days. Continue to log into your Google Classroom for updates. Please know that during this period of time the teachers will be in school on a rotating basis to close out their classrooms and may not be readily available to answer questions. They will get back to your questions/concerns as soon as they are able to do so.
Lastly, student attendance should still be submitted until the final day of school, June 16th.
Student Personal Belongings Pick-Up
Teachers will pack up students personal belongings in clear trash bags with the child's name visible. These materials will be gathered from your child's desk and cubbies and delivered to the gym or cafeteria for distribution.

If June 12th simply doesn’t work, email me directly. Thank You for all of your service during these difficult times!
Please be sure to read the following prior to coming to MMW and adhere to the following to ensure a smooth pick up for all!
- PRIOR TO COMING TO SCHOOL: On a piece of paper, write down your child(ren)’s last name first , then first name in LARGE print, so that we can easily view your last name from the curb. W will be maintaining social distancing and not approaching your vehicle to ask the name.
- Enter the front entrance drive as you would a car rider. Follow the cones, which loops around the side of the building and then to the front. Please stay within the orange cones.
- Please stay in your vehicle. Social distancing guidelines will be practiced during the distribution to families.
- Pop your trunk or rear passenger window, the bag(s) will be placed by staff into your vehicle. We wish to have minimal contact (if any).
- Drive away - please do not socialize with staff, we will be busy retrieving student belongings and wish to keep the traffic moving as quickly as possible.
- Do not drop off school items at this time. (for example library books, text books, or Chromebooks). These items will be kept by families until school reopens.
Items not picked up will be stored at school until school resumes.
If you are unable to pick up items, but will have another family pick-up your bags, please post both last names in your windshield. Due to traffic flow, we are unable to give each vehicle more than 2 families belongings at a time. You are welcomed to rejoin the car line to gather items for additional families.
Thank you in advance for your flexibility and patience as we distribute student belongings.
6th Grade Clap-Off
Some protocols that will be in place:
- Social distancing will be adhered to
- No one is permitted to leave their vehicles
- There is no stopping, it is strictly drive through
- Teachers will line up along the curb
- The bus circle entrance and drive will be used, traffic will proceed up the right of the drive, follow the circle and leave the drive on the left
- Traffic will flow best if vehicles come into the drive on the right and leave on the left, so that no vehicles need to make left hand turns.
We look forward to seeing our 6th graders!
