Coming of Age Artifacts

Examples of coming of age stories can be found everywhere!

Coming of Age: a story that relates an adolescent's movement toward adulthood and the corresponding awakening to a new understanding of his or herself and the world around them

TV shows

TV shows like Full house, Boy Meets World, and Wizards of Waverly Place are good examples of TV shows with the "coming of age story" embedded into them. They all have young characters that learn new life lessons in each episode in goofy and interesting ways. For example, in the show, "Boy Meets World", Corey is taught life lessons by his teacher Mr. Feeny, as he goes throughout high school, and even into college.

Movies

One of the movies that really stood out to us when looking for the "coming of age theme", was "The Fault in Our Stars". Augustus Waters and Hazel Grace both work through their illnesses together and come face to face with death at an early age. Other examples of movies with a coming of age story is Cinderella, Finding Nemo, and The Hunger Games.

Books/Novels

The Hunger games and The Fault in our Stars also fit into this category. In all 3 books in the Hunger Games series, Primrose was shown as a fearful child who could not defend herself, and in the end, she is taking care of the wounded and has become a fearless leader. Throughout the series, she learns strength and bravery because of the situation her family is in, at such a young age.

Songs

7 Years, by Lukas Graham definitely expresses the coming of age theme. Throughout the song, Graham mentions different points in his life where he was taught life lessons or learned new things that he took with him throughout his life. "once i was 7 years old, my mama told me go make yourself some friends or you'll be lonely"

Advertisement

Many of the advertisements we see on TV or in a magazine also show the theme of "coming of age". A good example of this is makeup or shaving advertisements. Shaving creme and makeup are typically products that teens and adults purchase, not children. This shows that as kid gets older, they will begin to buy some of these products.
