FROM THE PRINCIPAL...TONY WHITE
Earlier this week, I had a Norton Creek mom (and reading specialist in a nearby district!) sent me an interesting article on the actual science behind the importance of reading to our kids and giving them far less screen time. (And, as a parent, recognize this can be easier said than done.) Interviewed in this article is Dr. John Hutton, pediatrician and clinical researcher at Cincinnati Children's Hospital and he said something that really resonated with me. "Children are born with more neurons than they'll ever have in their life, essentially a blank slate. Depending on what type of stimulation the child has with caregivers -- being talked to, being held, going outside, being read to -- connections between these neurons are reinforced." While he goes on to speak mostly about children aged newborn through five, it really is never too late to read to and with our children. Pick books that appeal to your children with interesting characters and themes you can discuss. You'll be amazed at the fun you have and the things your child comes up with! The brain changes and grows all throughout our lives, and there is a ton of fascinating research on neuroplasticity out there that I will also share with you in the future. Much more immediately and over the next few weeks, you will hear about an exciting program starting at Norton Creek that will encourage all of us to read to and with our children.
Special thanks to Kerry Romberg for the awesome article that informed my writing this week. It looks like it will be a snowy weekend. I don't know if it'll be enough for sledding, but in all that you do over these next few days, I hope you enjoy yourselves!
5-ESSENTIALS SURVEY
Middle School Transfer Requests
Families who wish to submit Middle School Transfer requests may do so beginning February 3. The request form will be available on the District 303 website through February 28. Families must complete a separate form for each student they want transferred. Requests are granted based on space available so siblings are not guaranteed placement. A written decision will be communicated to families before spring break.
Once the request is approved, a student may remain at that middle school throughout his or her middle school career, as long as the student resides in District 303.
Families of students granted permission to attend a school outside of their assigned attendance are responsible for their own transportation.
Students will return to their assigned attendance area high school regardless of the middle school attended.

IMPORTANT COLD WEATHER & OUTSIDE RECESS INFORMATION
Per District policy, we will be going outside for recess as long as the temperature (with wind chill) is above 0 F and it is not raining. With that in mind, please make sure your child is dressed to go outside on days when it is cold, snowy or windy. Students should bring outerwear to school in a bag to put on before recess. Please make sure they have hats, gloves, scarves, snow pants and boots if they want to play in the snow. Don’t forget to label your child’s outerwear so it does not end up in the Lost and Found.
