FMS EXPLO Newsletter
August 24th, 2018. We're glad you're here!
FMS Counseling: Mrs. Crawford, Mrs. Horstmeier & Ms. Jo
We hope each of you had a great 1st full week here at FMS.
It is important that you are HERE! Being in school all day, every day, helps your child get the most out of middle school. Encourage good attendance with these ideas:
* Point out that there is no substitute for being in class. Your student needs to be present to hear teachers explain concepts, to participate in group projects and class discussions, and to ask questions.
* Schedule doctor, dentist, and orthodontist appointments for before or after school hours or on days off, like professional development days for faculty members whenever possible. If you can't, try to arrange them for lunchtime.
* It will be easier for your child to get up on time for school if he or she had at least nine hours of sleep. Set a reasonable bedtime, and make sure he or she puts away ALL electronic devices so he or she isn't tempted to stay awake and read messages or play games.
Needing to see the counselor?
Students needing to access the counselor's office can submit a form from their chromebooks by clicking on the apps button. This form comes only to the counselor's. If you have any questions or need help finding the form refer to the email that was sent today (Friday) from Mrs. Horstmeier. You can also ask your teacher for help. Obviously if there is an emergency, students will be sent to the Counselors Office immediately. This is just a great way to help students stay in the classroom for instruction time.
OLSAT Testing
Looking forward into September we will be testing 6th grade student using a group IQ test called OLSAT. This assessment identifies a student rough verbal and non verbal intelligence. We use this to help identify students who may qualify for project extra.

Also in September we are looking forward to starting to go into 6th and 7th grade social studies classes to do career lessons. For more information please contact Mrs. Crawford.

Dr. Moebes
We have had a great first FULL week! Thank you to our FMS students for bringing their best each day!
In the pictures below my announcements, you'll see a few examples of the Grading Sessions each of my classes completed this week. We did some hands on practice of creating, and then assessing our creations! Students had Play-Doh, and were instructed to create a functional pencil holder. They had time to create, evaluate the work of others, and refine their own projects before they received their final grade. We did this to help students understand how they receive grades in my classes. Short version: Show that you can meet the standard (do the task), and you receive a grade of 3 (Meets Standard). The objectives for each class have been posted on the Google Classroom for that class. Questions? Please let me know!
MUSIC 6
We have been doing a lot of work on classroom expectations this week. We have also completed pretests on singing, and music literacy. One of our daily activities is singing! We have been learning the basics of voice care, as well as performing singing games. Next week, we will really focus on reviewing mote and rest values.
Careers 8
This class has wrapped up our "GAME ON" activities for the beginning of the year. Students had the opportunity to choose to play Monopoly, Pay Day, and The Game of Life. We created vocabulary lists of finance-related words/concepts that are unfamiliar. We will make sure to focus on these during our finance unit later this semester.
We have the following field trips scheduled for our class:
November 15th: Campus tour/visit to William Woods University
November 27th: Campus visit/tour to University of Missouri, Columbia
PARENTS, WE NEED YOU! We are looking for guests to come speak to our Careers class this semester! Please email me if you would like to visit our classroom to tell us about your career! Our students LOVE to hear from YOU!
7th Grade Choir (Hornet Pride)/8th grade choir (Hornet Singers)
I think we have determined our sections, or groups, within each choir! This is exciting because it means we are well on our way to building our ensembles, AND preparing for our first concert!
FMS VOCAL MUSIC HANDBOOKS: These have come home! The signed contracts are due on Friday, August 31st.
Arts Alive
Students are chomping at the bit to get started on our Fall show: ANNIE JR! Students were assigned scripts this week, and are free to take them home, or leave them in the classroom. We are continuing to do acting exercises, focusing on improvisation. We will be examining the Great Depression to give historical context to the setting of Annie Jr! Auditions for the show will take place in 2-3 weeks!

We are so excited to see you all in the band program this year! There are going to be so many exciting things!
6th Grade Band:
Wow! These first few days of 6th grade band with instruments has been really exciting and I think the students would agree that we have a lot to learn.
In class this next week we will be assessing over names of the instrument parts, putting our instrument together correctly and mouth piece call and response. Student are encouraged to look over pages 2 and 3 in their books. This is where it will talk about the parts of the instrument as well as how to put the instrument together.
If your student still needs a book, please let me know so that I can order one through our music dealer. If you order through us you can just pay the school when the book comes in. The books cost about $9.00, I will let you know how much you owe me!
Also, if your student needs any reeds, valve oil, slide grease or any other accessory for your instrument, you can always buy these through the school as well!
Please let me know if you have any questions!
Throughout the year I will post things on google classroom as well as through email. Please check your emails frequently.
7th Grade Band:
7th Grade Band is doing so well already!
In the next week we will be going over the pre test that we just finished taking over vocabulary as well as staring to learn more about the musical notes and symbols.
We have started out new book, and if you would like to buy one for your child that they can keep at home that is more than welcome. Please let me know if you would like to go that route, and I will get one ordered. You can then pay the school as soon as they come in.
The 7th grade band will be playing at a Veteran's Day assembly at the middle school and we just received that sheet music to start sight reading today. Please encourage them to be practicing at home.
8th Grade Band:
8th Grade Band is off to a strong start. We are doing a lot of review, and the students are responding very well.
In the next week ,we will be learning about chromaticism and reviewing vocabulary words from last year. We are looking at our sheet music for homecoming over the next few weeks as well, and getting music for the Star Spangled Banner and Fulton Boy. This music will be performed at the homecoming parade as well as the football game. More information will be sent home regarding this event in the next couple of weeks. Information can also be found on google classroom as well as email and the newsletter every week.
I will be ordering the polo shirts this week. Please do not send money with your child until the shirts come in. I will let them know how much they owe. Be aware that the students will need to have a band polo, shorts and tennis shoes for the homecoming parade.
7/8 Wire Choir:
This week in 7/8th Grade Wire Choir we will be working on the Am and Em chords. As well as adding G and G7. Students will be working on chord progressions as well as looking at reading music in TAB.
Students have received new books, please make sure that you are encouraging your students to take care of their books, as well as the equipment.
Feel free to contact us with any questions at sblandford@fulton58.org or kjneudecker@fulton58.org.

The FMS Thrive Hive
The Fulton Middle School Thrive Hive opened for business on Monday, August 21st. The store is open 7:30 to 7:45 each morning. If students aren't able to shop then they can email Mrs. Horstmeier @ shortmeier@fulton58.org or Mrs. Yates @ hyates@fulton58.org for an appointment to shop.
The Thrive Hive is designed to allow students to use their Hornet Bucks--earned through the Positive Behavior Support Program--to purchase items from the store. The Thrive Hive was created to help the needs of the FMS Student Community.
Items currently needed for the store are:
Any age appropriate toys, DVD's for the holidays.
As we gear up for winter: Hats, gloves, scarves, and coats.
Snack items: Slim jims, and pop tarts.
Other needs are ear buds and water bottles.
We will be gearing up for the holiday season so baskets to make gift packages for students to purchase would be great.
All other items are appreciated as well.
