Student Showcase / One School, One Book
On March 7th, students will be sharing our school with their families! Families will have the opportunity to see their child's progress in academic areas, meet with specials teachers, and learn about their child's recently released College and Career Readiness Index. In addition, all families will get a copy of the book Save Me A Seat, so you can participate in our One School, One Book challenge! All teachers will be reading this book aloud to their classes during the month of March.
The Leader in Me paradigm focus for this month is that educators empower students to lead their own learning. At Line Creek students lead their own learning and will showcase this to parents on March 7th at our student led showcase. Our student showcase is a great example of how students lead their own learning.
Healthy Habits - Dental Awareness Month
Miles of Smiles is a no charge dental program that will be at Line Creek Elementary February 20 – March 29. If your child participates in the program, their dental care will be provided on site, in the school, by a Missouri licensed dentist. Miles of Smiles provides a full service dental program including cleanings, x-rays, fillings, crowns and extractions for free. There are income guidelines to qualify for the service – for example, if your income is below $49,200 for a family of four, you will qualify. Again, there are no charges for the service. Every student at Line Creek received a form home in his/her backpack last week. If you are interested, please complete the form and return it to school. There is also a way to sign up online if you prefer: www.milesofsmilesinc.org/patient_info
Please get in touch with Amy Powell, the PH District Miles of Smiles community liaison, if you have any questions or if you need another form for registration. PowellA@parkhill.k12.mo.us or 816-359-6765

Habit of the Month - Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood
This month your child(ren) will be learning about Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood
Please read about this habit and share this habit at home.
This habit is best approached by introducing listening as a skill that should be practiced. Learning to listen without interrupting and learning to listen with your ears, your eyes, and your heart will help children build a foundation for Habit 5. Simply put, we have two ears and one mouth so that we can spend more time listening with the intent to understand.
Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood: Listen Before You Talk
Activity Ideas
1. To better understand how listening can help or hurt a relationship, try “pretend listening” with your child for a few minutes. Your child will be frustrated. Explain what you were doing and discuss how your child felt. Now have your child ignore you when you are talking. Discuss how it makes you feel when you are ignored. Finish the discussion by thinking of ways to let the other person know when you feel you are not being truly listened to. Remind your child that this is also an example of Think Win-Win.
2. Body language can be even more important than words. Play a game with your kids where you each try to guess the other’s emotion (happy, sad, angry, frustrated, bored, etc.) without using any words, just body language.
3. Demonstrate how saying the same phrase in a different tone of voice can give the phrase a completely different meaning. Try emphasizing different words in the phrase “I didn’t say you did it” and then have your child tell you how the meaning changed.
4. Read Chapter 5 of The 7 Habits of Happy Kids book with your child and then complete the Parent’s Corner.
Park Hill Stars
The Park Hill Star recognition program was started in 2015 to celebrate support staff and teachers whose work is especially noteworthy.
The following is an overview of the Park Hill Star Program:
Our employees are the reason we are so successful here in the Park Hill School District, and we would like to recognize them for all they do for our students.
That is why we present the Park Hill Star award once a month to a pre-K or elementary teacher, a secondary teacher and a support employee.
Nominations are not being accepted at this time, but opportunities will re-open at the beginning of the 2018-19 school year. Thanks to everyone who took the time to nominate a Park Hill Star this year!
Early Release Days - Mark Your Calendar
All elementary schools will have an early release once a month for our teachers to receive professional development focused on increasing student success. On the following days school will be released at 1:30 pm.
March 7
April 11
May 9
Each early release day, we will celebrate our school by wearing our Line Creek SPIRIT WEAR!
Line Creek Elementary Communication
You will find several ways to stay up to date on school activities throughout the year on the Line Creek website, Facebook, Twitter and newsletters from your child’s teacher. You will also occasionally get an automated email or voicemail message sent to you by the school with important information and reminders. We know two-way communication is best, so please feel free to call, email, or stop by the school with any questions you may have regarding your child’s education.
