Around the School
I would like to take this opportunity to cordially invite you to Grand View
Elementary’s winter Christmas production, entitled ‘Twas One Crazy Night Before
Christmas’. The show will be held in the Rimrock Auditorium on Wednesday,
December 20, at 6:30 pm, which is only one week away! Students should be sure
to arrive by 6 pm in the Rimrock cafeteria. Grand View Elementary students will
be telling the story of a family of cousins on Christmas Eve who have a very wacky
night. An excerpt from the teacher’s manual: “Most of the cast is playing
themselves, excited children both thrilled with and filled with eager anticipation
of Christmas, while dreading the consequences of the holidays, sleeping on the
floor, putting up with house guests, being disappointed with their presents and so
on.” While our selection of narrators tries to keep the show track with the
traditional poem, all sorts of things seem to get in the way to create a very crazy
and silly Christmas Eve!
At Grand View we have been working on the songs for this production since
before Halloween, so this is a long awaited performance for your students.
Compared to previous concerts, this is a full on musical, with characters, acting
and scenes as well as some very non-traditional Christmas tunes (like how the
mother of the family starts using football to make dinner!). Putting on a real,
honest to goodness musical with elementary students is a very new experience
for me; all I’d done before were “stand and sing” concerts that follow a theme but
not a story. I was a little nervous to put myself outside of my comfort zone and
attempt this with my students because it is a very big undertaking, but I could not
be prouder of how hard they have worked. They took to the music and the acting
with enthusiasm, and I have every confidence they will wow you with their
performance.
So save the date! It’s going to be quite a show!
Musically Yours,
Cathryn Volk

Mrs. Draper (Preschool): In PreK we are now halfway through our learning. Our ABC blocks are turning out awesome - thanks to helpful, caring parents! We are enjoying sharing them with each other as we learn about a letter’s name and sound, along with words that begin with that sound. Yes, we are busy “building” our ABC knowledge.
Miss Davis (Kindergarten/First): K/1 has continued to learn about rivers and the different animals that live in rivers specifically, the different fish species that habitat the snake river. We have also spent the last two weeks working on the drafting process in writing while constructing our very own personal narratives. Kindergarten has been working on composing and decomposing numbers 6-8 during core math while improving foundational reading skills during core ELA. I am very proud of the hard work my class has put in so far this year.
Mrs. Meyers (Second Core): Second grade just finished their unit on water and where is comes from. They worked super hard on their water cycle posters and song. They each got to present them to the class. They all did an awesome job! We are now working on learning ways we can help others and how to be responsible. In math the students just finished up adding and subtracting within 1000. We are now learning about money.

At Home
Another note is to make sure the text students are reading while at home are grade/skill-level appropriate. Students should make sure to read literature (not just texts from one another), and expository texts. Students generally gravitate to reading books, not informational texts, but informational (non-fiction) texts are just as important. Try encouraging your child to read non-fiction books about something that interests them!
Community Groups
Students have also learned about different character traits such as responsibility, caring, honesty, empathy, and sympathy (among others). Our Community Groups are a valuable time spent with our students, and it shows.
Over the past three years, there has been a remarkable difference in the mindset of our students — they work collaboratively, problem-solve on their own during lunch and recess, and have more grit during challenging tasks than ever before. Students have often been heard motivating one another by saying a student is just “in the dip,” and needs to try harder or try something different to understand the concepts! It has been such an honor to see these kids grow in not only their academics, but also as people that we are proud to have enter our world as adults when the time comes.
Really, what we are doing is simple: we are teaching our students how to be better people. For 30 minutes each morning, we come together as a community to talk about how we can become the types of people we want to see in our world.
