MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL OPHUS
Dear Fairview Families,
This past Tuesday, students had the unique opportunity to visit with author, Kate Hannigan. Kate spoke about her experiences as an author, the importance of perseverance, and how to generate ideas. Our students were engaged as she helped them to see that they all can be successful as writers and entertained them with her stories. Special thanks to the PTO for sponsoring this event and to Mrs. Larson for her efforts in coordinating the details! Looking ahead to next week, please join us on Monday evening at 6:30 pm in the LRC for our next PTO meeting to stay informed about all of the ways the school and PTO are partnering together on behalf of our students. Please read below for some updates regarding the days and weeks ahead. Have a nice weekend!
Sincerely,
Dan Ophus
Fairview Principal
Winter Concerts: As you have already heard, next week we will be hosting our winter concerts for 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade students as well as our Fairview Chorus. On Wednesday, February 8th, our 2nd graders will perform at 6:00 pm followed by our 3rd graders and 3rd grade chorus at 7:15 pm. Then on Thursday, February 9th, our 4th graders will perform at 6:00 pm. This concert will also include a performance by our 4th/5th grade chorus. All concerts will be approximately 30 minutes long and will take place in the gym. Students can arrive 20 minutes before show time and they should report to their classrooms when they arrive. 5th grade chorus members will report to the multi-purpose room to meet with Mrs. Happ. If you have any questions, contact me or email Mrs. Happ at chapp@d57.org.
Special Area Open House: As part of our February check-ins with parents (see more below), our special area teachers would like to invite any interested parents to attend an open house on Thursday, February 16th from 3:30-6:30 pm. The purpose of this time will be to learn more about and explore what your child is doing when they attend PE, Art, Music and LRC. Mrs. Kennedy, Mrs. Morrison, Mrs. Piscitello, Mrs. Happ, Mrs. Larson and Mrs. Soderholm will be in attendance to show families examples of what students are doing during specials and educate parents about their respective curricula. Students and parents together can tour through the gym, library, art and music rooms for this unique experience. We hope you are able to join our special area staff for this opportunity!
Officer Friendly 3rd Grade Visits: On February 7th, Officer Friendly will visit with our 3rd grade students to talk about Bullying. This is a 45 minute program where children learn about bully behavior and tools they can use to stop it when they experience or witness it occurring. They also learn about the importance of reporting bullying to a trusted adult. While this topic is also addressed as part of our Second Step program, it is helpful for students to think about how to handle bullying outside of the school day and reflect upon what they can do in other settings to stay and keep others safe.
February Check-Ins: District 57 will be offering targeted opportunities for parents and teachers/service providers to check in during the month of February. Our district encourages ongoing two way communication between our staff and families. In addition to emails, phone calls and meetings as needed throughout the year, we hold parent and teacher conferences with all families in November. New this year, we will be offering check-ins on an as needed basis during the month of February. These will be different from conferences in that there will not be a full presentation about your child. You will indicate a topic you wish to discuss or questions you have for the teacher or related service provider. There is less time allocated than for fall conferences, so depending upon the level of interest, available time will be prioritized based on student needs. Check-ins may be done over the phone, via Zoom or at an in-person meeting. Please don’t feel obligated to check in, but you are welcome to request a time with a staff member if you have a particular topic to discuss.
If you are interested in having a check-in with any certified staff member, please fill out this form by the end of the day today. You can translate the page for the sign up form using your browser. To translate the sign up form into another language, right-click anywhere in the Google Form and select the “Translate to Language” option. Please fill out a separate form for each check-in you are requesting. For example, if you have two children at Fairview and you wish to talk with one child’s homeroom teacher and the other child’s art teacher and social worker, you would fill out the form three times. You will then be contacted to schedule a time to talk with the teacher or related service provider. Staff may schedule meetings/calls before school, during their planning time, lunch hour, or after school. Feel free to follow up if you don’t hear anything by Friday, February 10th.
Falcon Rally: The Fairview PTO is excited to hold its Falcon Rally fundraiser on Friday, February 24th. Students are encouraged to talk to their family and other relatives to get pledges and raise money to keep our Fairview PTO running strong. In addition to keeping our PTO programs and activities up and running, the PTO has also agreed to help with the purchase of a new digital sign outside our building. It will use the same brick pillars that are on our current sign, but will be digital, which is a big improvement and much more dynamic. Their goal is to raise $30,000 for the PTO in support of these programs and this purchase. There will be some exciting prizes for both the entire school and individual students to win as part of Falcon Rally, and the fundraiser will culminate with a pickleball extravaganza in PE classes on Friday, February 24th. All students will be assigned PE on that Friday even if they don't typically have it in their schedule. For more information, please review this link.
Please contact Jessica Talbot (jtalbot@d57.org) or Cindy Buell (cbuell@d57.org) if you need assistance with language translation of any of the flyers that appear in the newsletter.
DRESS FOR OUTDOOR RECESS
As the weather turns cooler, please make sure your children are dressed to go out for recess. Unless it is raining or the temperature /wind chill is too cold (15 degrees or below, real-feel temperature) the students will go out every day for recess. Please write your student’s last name on a tag in their coat and snowpants.
All students will go out with their class unless we have a doctor’s note limiting their participation. If a student has been ill and he/she is not feeling well enough to participate in all the activities of the school day, perhaps another day at home will insure a healthy return to school.
IMPORTANT REMINDER FROM NURSE BRUNNING
In order to prevent the spread of germs, it is important that any student who vomits, has diarrhea, or has a fever be kept home for at least 24 hour after the symptoms end. They must be 24 hours free of these symptoms without the use of medication to relieve the symptom. If you have any questions about this please feel free to contact Kelly Brunning.

NATIONAL CHILDREN'S DENTAL HEALTH MONTH
February is National Children's Dental Health Month! Many people are not aware how important dental health is and how much it can impact our overall health. When we do not properly care for our teeth, such as brushing, flossing, and visiting the dentist regularly, our mouths can become filled with bacteria that have been shown to increase our risk of endocarditis, cardiovascular disease, pneumonia as well as pregnancy or birth complications. It has also been found that the number of teeth we have is significantly correlated to our life expectancy.
As an activity for students, click on the graphic for a "Smile Care Chart" that you can print out for use at home. We also have hard copies in the office available. Students who complete the chart and turn it in to the health office by the end of the month will be entered into a drawing for a small prize.
As always, please let me know if you have any questions!
Sincerely,
Kelly Brunning, RN, BSN, PEL-CSN
