Rich Mathematical Tasks
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) has released at least one rich mathematical task for each grade level in grades K-5.
These tasks will be added to the units they align to in the next few weeks. The VDOE has stated they will add another task in the upcoming weeks. As they are completed, we will add them to our curriculum. Teachers should look for them on the Virginia Beach Objective (VBO) overview page. The tasks should be implemented to support the work we are doing around problem solving as a school division. Each task is accompanied with an implementation plan, rubric and anchor papers.
Miniature Landscape Project - Virginia Flower and Garden Expo
Students can design and create a miniature landscape to be displayed at the Virginia Flower and Garden Expo on Jan. 24-26, 2020.
This project includes skills in research, writing, science, math, music, art, history and geography. Using the guidelines provided, students will design and build their mini-landscape. This project can be incorporated into the classroom through connections to the Virginia Standards of Learning. Contact Mary Hubbard at mvyhubbard@gmail.com for more information.
Water Quality Testing - Virginia Aquarium Field Experience
Teachers can schedule a behind-the-scenes tour for their students as part of a field trip to the VA Aquarium.
Participants will collect water samples from Owls Creek and conduct field and laboratory tests. They will learn how Water Quality Labs maintain healthy aquariums and work with citizen scientists to track watershed health. Call 385-FISH or email vamscgso@virginiaaquarium.com, for more information.
Dear Mrs. Metzger,
I just wanted thank you and your staff for opening your doors and making me feel so welcome today. From my first interaction during check-in, to Mrs. Williams graciously taking a break from vacuuming to help me find the collab room, to all the grade level teachers sharing their thought process on how they meticulously plan for the success of each student, to the smiles from Ms. Flynn and Ms. Feliciano in the main office, I could not have been more impressed. I would be remiss if I didn't provide some highlights of my visit. You have some rockstars who are not teachers; they are educators. They care and are passionate about every kid and their data analysis skills are only going to make them more effective. The coaches and ITS did a great job leading discussions and collaborating with staff to find solutions for the struggling learner. Your OLT is sharp and on to something good. I was impressed by their observations and discussions. It will only be a matter of time before their positive impact is felt. In short, know I arrived with high expectations and left with all of them being exceeded. There is so much good work being done at Trantwood to brag about and I have no doubt the students who matriculate to GNMS next year will be among the most ready. Know if there is ever anything I may do for you or your staff, kindly make me aware. Have a great Friday and enjoy your much deserved weekend.
