Third Grade Students Complete Service Projects for Locals Organizations!

Third-grade students at R.C. Waters Elementary School have been hard at work learning about the importance of giving back. Every month the students complete a service project for a local organization. A representative from that organization comes in to talk to the students about their organization and shares ways they can get involved.

In October, the third graders collected over 400 pairs of socks for our annual “Socktober” service project. The socks were donated to Mosaic Ministries of South Toledo. This shelter services many families with young children. In November and December, we partnered with Senior Resources of Ottawa County. Third-grade students made placemats and cards for Thanksgiving and Christmas. These placemats and cards were given to senior citizens who are unable to leave their home. In the month of January, we worked with the Ottawa County Board of Developmental Disabilities. Third-grade students made a big sign, cards and goody bags for their basketball team. Several students even made the trip to Port Clinton on January 24th to watch the game and cheer on the team.

We are looking forward to the rest of the school year and the service projects we have planned. This idea came after the loss of a wonderful teacher and friend, Whitney Meinke. The third-grade teachers wanted to do something to honor their friend and colleague and thought that giving back was a great way to honor and share the kindness that Mrs.Meinke always shared with everyone.

Our students have been busy!

Over the past few weeks, we enjoyed Valentine activities, exchanged note cards and special treats, and enjoyed Valentine books read by Ms. Chris from the OH Library. We enjoyed a visit from Ms. Brenda from the OSU Extension Program. She surprised us with special healthy chocolate cupcakes made from applesauce and pumpkin! They were very yummy! We also wrapped up our Creative Curriculum Clothing Unit with visits from familiar faces who work in our building. Deputy Chad and Mr. Ryan to show us the clothing that they wear to work. Deputy Chad showed us his uniform that he wears when he is on duty, and Mr. Ryan showed us some of the safety attire that he wears when working at our school. We took a break from the curriculum and read The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. After the story, we created an art project with homemade puffy paint to look like snow. We are starting our Buildings Unit of Study which is a lot of fun!
