Giving Thanks
Dear CFL Families,
I wanted to take this opportunity to celebrate some of the great things that I love about CFL, the staff, the community and especially the kids:
We love your kids and their parents and we love and support each other. When one of us is in need, we are there for them.
Our students are growing as readers and mathematicians!
Our Support Team for jumping in wherever they are needed.
The front office staff is amazing! They are there for everyone for anything and everything.
All the staff members who go above and beyond for our students each day.
Parents who support our special days with supplies, treats and so much more.
The stories parents share with me.
Having an amazing Thanksgiving lunch from our kitchen crew
Throwing the football and playing basketball with a bunch of screaming Kinder and 1st graders.
Our District leaders for always being supportive and leading us in the right direction.
Our maintenance crew for making CFL beautiful outside and inside.
There are so many things that I am thankful for being the Principal at CFL and this is only a taste. With Thanksgiving just around the corner and Christmas shortly behind this is a time to celebrate friends, family and what we are thankful for.
Kim Frees
Principal
Just a reminder that students and staff will be on Thanksgiving Break from November 19th -26th
Fall Student Led Conferences Are Here!
There will be no school on Tuesday November 2nd.
Scheduling forms have been sent home and confirmation forms will be sent by teachers.
Meeting with your child’s teacher should help build strong parent – teacher partnerships.
The students will come prepared with samples of their work showcasing skills that they have been learning. Be sure and talk with your child before the conference. Find out what they think are their best subjects, and what subjects they like the least. Find out why. Also, ask your child if there is anything they would like you to talk about with their teacher.
Here are some questions you might ask about your child’s progress :
Is my child in different groups for different subjects? Why? • How well does my child get along with others? • Is my child working up to his or her ability? • Does my child participate in class discussions and activities? • What strengths do you see in my child? How can I support my child at home?
We appreciate your participating and partnership

Student Pick Up
Unfortunately, children left waiting for a ride home spend a very long and uneventful time sitting on the bench outside of the office. Also this effects our teachers and the commitments they have afterschool as well.
Parents remember that you need to walk your kids to their lines in the morning. Students are not allowed to just be dropped off. When you pick your child up, please come to their line and make visual contact with your child's teacher. They is to ensure the safety of our students.
Information about Scoring Student Work
3.0 - If your child receives a 3.0, it means that they were able to show or do the work completely on their own. This means no teacher support was needed and they were able to comprehend and complete the task independently.
2.0 - If your child receives a 2.0, it means they were able to do most of the work on their own with little teacher support. Sometimes children need clarification or need to be shown an example to help make the connection for them. As an early childhood school, many of our skills are at a 2.0 level and is the highest score a student can receive as many of the skills we teach are at a 2.0 foundational level.
1.0 - If your child receives a 1.0, it means they are still learning the material and they need teacher support in order to complete the task. This tells me as the teacher I need to sit one-on-one with your child and re-teach so they are able to grasp the concept.
IP - In Progress, this means your child is currently working on this evidence outcome, but does not have enough evidence for the teacher to score it numerically. It could be that your child has been absent and is missing work.
Again, these scores mainly help the teachers (and you) to see where your child is at with the material being taught each week. Some days, a goal score of 2.0 is the highest score they can receive because it is a foundational skill. Some days, a goal score of 3.0 is the highest score they can receive because it takes that foundational skill to the next level of learning and applying knowledge.
Intervention News
In interventions we have been really focusing on beginning and ending sounds in spoken one syllable words. Some examples include: tub, bat, gum, big. Isolating sounds helps your child understand that when we put sounds together we can make words.
You can support your child in this by saying simple words like the ones above, and asking them to tell you the first sound that they hear. (not the letter, but the sound the letter makes). If they can do the first sound, then move to having them tell you the ending sound.
Other quick and easy ways you can support your child in reading include singing the alphabet song, and reading together every day.

CFL is Soaring to New Heights
This year at CFL we are focusing on goal setting. Goal setting helps the students know where they are at on a topic and what their next steps are. Every student has set a goal related to literacy, personal wellness and productive citizenship. When a student meets a goal they get to sign their name to a cutout and put it up on our goal setting board. Our goal is for each kindergarten and first grade team to fill their hot air balloon up with shapes by the end of the year. Tonight ask your student what their goals are….
What's Happening in PE at CFL
Hello CFL Families,
This month in Physical Education we will be continuing our locomotor movement patterns as well as continuing our ball handling progression. Movement patterns that we will cover will include; skipping, side-slide and leaping. Ball skills will move into kicking, striking and volleying. As the colder months arrive in our valley, please help your students remember to pack extra shoes for PE class. Please no boots, sandals, heels or crocs. I will gladly help change and tie your kids shoes when they come to PE class. As always, contact me with any questions.

COVER THOSE COUGHS
Please help us reinforce with your child the importance of coughing and sneezing into their elbow. This helps us dramatically cut down on the spread of germs here at school, and is the preferred method promoted by most pediatricians. Please join us in practicing this skill with your child in your homes. Encouraging your child to blow and/or wipe their nose on a tissue and then throw it away themselves is also a huge help in “germ control” here at school.
As always, if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please stop by the office.

Preschool - You will be dropping your child off at CFL you will go to the Preschool back doors, which can be found on the west side of the building. Please park on the west end of the building along Parachute Avenue - DO NOT park in the bus loading zone as it will cause busses to be late. You will then enter the Preschool playground and follow the color line for the teacher your child will have this year. There will be only one gate available for entry/exit of the playground . Please see the image for the route you will take as you drop off/pick up your child each day.
If you are dropping your child off at BUE for Preschool you will drop off at the side doors on the left front of the building. DO NOT park in the bus loading zone as it will cause busses to be late. Please park in the parking lot and use the crosswalk to walk your child to their teacher's door. Teachers will be out to greet you.
Preschool Home Extensions
Simon Says is an easy learning game that you can play with your preschooler. It helps in the development of listening skills, vocabulary, following directions, and gross motor just to name a few. Don’t worry about the original rules of whether you say “Simon Says” or not. This is just a fast, fun, easy interaction with your child they are sure to enjoy. ☺ In the link below is a page of directions to inspire you with a few ideas.
The Weather is Getting Colder!
Our Colorado weather can change on a moment’s notice, and students need to be prepared for the changes. At CFL , our policy states that students will be sent outside for recess each day unless:
1. The outside temperature and/or wind chill is below 0
2. It is pouring rain.
3. An emergency is called by the Weather Service.
Recesses throughout the day last between 20-25. If students bring hats and gloves in their backpacks, they can be ready for any drastic weather changes.
Through our Family Resource Center, we have hats, mittens and coats available for students and families in need. Please come in and visit with us if your child is in need of warm winter clothing.
Please help your child remember to bring the necessary items so they can be comfortable and enjoy their time outside at recess during the cold weather.
If you would like to donate any new or lightly used winter clothing, please contact the Family Resource Center.
Our hope is that every student at CFL will be prepared for the cold winter ahead, and we thank you for doing your part at home to make sure that happens.

COVID SAFETY PROCEDURES
Student Safety during COVID:
As with last year, we will continue to follow guidance and recommendations from state and local officials. This year brings some changes for our students, parents and community as we continue working towards creating a safe environment for students and staff members. For the remainder of the COVID 19 Pandemic, there are numerous safety precautions we will follow as proposed by CDC,CDPHE, and GCPHE. This is to ensure student, staff and community safety.
As stated in the "Opening Schools Plan" masks are encouraged but not required. Please keep in mind this is subject to change based on COVID-19 numbers and guidance from local and state health departments.
We are dedicated to returning to school as normal as possible. We believe in-person learning and socialization are key in developing a great education. We will follow all local and state-level mandates. The Garfield 16 Plan for Opening Schools can be accessed directly using the link below.
Health Screenings
As always, if any member of your household is being tested for Covid or has tested positive for Covid, please keep all family members at home and contact the school immediately for next steps.
As students enter the building we will continue to screen for symptoms and send home ill students. (Please keep your student home if they are ill.) If a person answers yes to any of the screener questions they will need to return home for further monitoring by their personal physician.
