BIRCH ELEMENTARY
Birch First students voted for third and fourth grade students they wanted to represent their classes for Student Council. Several Student Council members have already served our campus this year by welcoming Genius Hour volunteers before our first session of the year. We appreciate these student leaders!
Wednesdays in October are all about respect, and these Birch First friends show it everyday! We are very proud of our Birch First Pirates that strive to set a positive example for their classmates.
The GT classes are using sticky stacks to write responses to text. 3rd and 4th grade wrote round robin style using the sticky stack strategy. After all groups completed writing their response, each group presented their response to the class. Not only are they learning to lift information from the texts using the strategy, they are learning how to give constructive feedback in a respectful way.
Birch Elementary School will hold the “Fall-tastic” book fair from October 24th-27th in the Birch Music Room.

MIDDLE SCHOOL
Exciting things are happening at Pine Tree Middle School as we end our first 9 weeks of school. Pine Tree Middle School students are gearing up for another fabulous year of U.I.L. We are organizing coaches and kicking off the U.I.L events with an ice cream social for our previous U.I.L students. We are the defending champs this year with our first place trophy, so we will be ready for a challenging competition. Tryouts and after school practices will be starting soon also.
Mrs. Parker’s CEER students performed a living wax museum for parents and guests last week. Students researched a famous inventor’s life in order to portray them accurately while in the museum. Our September Library Challenge votes are in. For our Amazing Maze Challenge, First Place goes to 6th grader JaKaden King, second place to 5th grader Melanie Dentley and 3rd place to 6th Grader Lilian Gomez. Our Readers Recover challenge winner was 6th grader Saray Hernandez. Leah Gatlin found the mystery prize from the Google Classroom and turned in a Point of View Challenge paper.
Mrs. Brannon, a 5th grade science teacher, was named our teacher of the month for all her outstanding activities in class and for building great relationships. Fifth grade science classes spent some time exploring nature in the outdoor classrooms last week also. Students of the month for September are 6th graders Micah Nelson and Jackson Knight and 5th graders Harvey Woodkins and Isabella Deel.

HIGH SCHOOL
FIRST NINE WEEKS IS OVER
With the end of school on Friday, October 14, the first nine weeks of school at Pine Tree High School will come to an end. It has been a fast nine weeks that has seen a lot of successes on the campus.
Students are learning strong character traits and characteristics in Advisory class each Thursday and Friday, teaching them to make better decisions on their lives in and out of school. The administration is stressing these lessons each week, and they are asking teachers to work really hard to impress upon students how they should live and react to life situations on a daily basis. So far, students are responding well to these lessons and seem comfortable discussing, in class, different situations they may face.
Band is in the middle of competition season and has performed well in Mount Pleasant, Arlington, Mesquite and several other locations heading into Regionals shortly, again, in Mount Pleasant. The halftime show including Color Guard deals with colors and original choreography from a talented group of band directors and Color Guard directors. Band is hoping for a trip to state from this upcoming competition and is confident it will do well.
Choir is approaching competition season as well as beginning to prepare for the Christmas concert at Trinity Episcopal Church in Longview on December 6. Danielle Warren and Johanna Eppley are busy with four different choirs and about 150 students preparing work for competition and concerts. The choir has been exceptional in the past sending students to state on a regular basis.
Theatre had its first production of the year, The Mousetrap, this past week and had outstanding crowds come to the theatre to watch the students perform. Chris and Nicole Dickson are new to Pine Tree this year, and they have brought an excitement and professionalism to theatre that has engaged students in the acting and technical end of the program. Theatre is expecting big things from the 60 students enrolled in the program this year, and all of them are committed to doing the best.
Football captured a big win over Nacogdoches at home and then traveled to Whitehouse to play a district game. Coach Jason Bachman and his team are in the middle of a playoff race and hope to end the year with a trip to the postseason.
Likewise, Coach Lacy Dennis and the volleyball team are in the second round of district and hope to take their season into the playoffs. Currently they are in third place and will make a playoff run if things continue the way they are.
Classes are going well for Pine Tree students as the first nine weeks comes to an end. Students are engaged, enjoying learning and are producing some magical material through not only core classes but electives as well. The UIL academic team is really shaping up for a good year under the direction of Fine Arts Director/UIL Coordinator Lee Branson and teacher Terri Davis. UIL Academics is a strong force at PTHS, it has been for years, but this year is shaping up to be a very special year.
EXCEL
ExCEL would like to acknowledge our Pirate of the Month, Rebekah Harris. Rebekah is new to Pine Tree High School. She came to Pine Tree after missing the second semester of school at White Oak ISD.
Rebekah heard of ExCEL through a personal friend of her Mom's and decided that the ExCEL program was just what she needed academically. Since starting ExCEL at the start of the year, Rebekah has completed six semester courses and earned three credits! It is her goal to graduate this semester so she can walk at the January ExCEL graduation.
Ater she graduates, her plans are to attend Kilgore College. She intends to study Early Childhood Development and Education. She says she has always been enjoyed working with children and that is why she has chosen this career.
ExCEL teacher, Jennifer Wilbur, describes Rebekah as someone with an upbeat personality. She praised her for not letting outside personal issues affect her work ethic while she is at school. "She is a very hard worker," says Wilbur.
Rebekah sets a good example for others. You can choose to let those challenges let you down or you can get up and fight. Rebekah has chosen to fight for what she wants and the ExCEL team is doing all they can to help her succeed.
Congratulations, Rebekah, for being chosen Pirate of the Month for September!
PACE ALTERNATIVE CAMPUS
The Pine Tree PACE Elementary ABU is intentional about supporting the growth of students in the areas of social and emotional wellness. Opportunities to engage in learning activities such as the “Friendship Fruit Salad” after reading Enemy Pie is a creative means to immerse students in character development. Kudos to Ms. Taylor, her dynamic team & the ABU Elementary students!
One of the quests of the PACE Alternative Campus is to instill and restore the love of learning. Coach Randy Castleberry does an outstanding job engaging students in relevant yet critical dialogues on a daily basis.
Recently, the students predicted how many rides Ryan Wagoner and his brother would accomplish in one day of the Parkeology Challenge. These 4 students predicted the closest and received a reward for their guess. Kudos for Coach C and his work with our students. We are proud of these students for being PACE STRONG!
