Kinder's Weekly Words

May 2nd, 2016

Hello Kindergarten Parents!

Here is a brief overview of what your children have been learning over the past couple of weeks!

How We Organize Ourselves

Language Arts

Kindergarten has wrapped up our unit on extreme weather. We have spent the past couple of weeks revisiting plants and how they grow. Students practiced sequencing events by writing the steps of how to plant an oak tree, beginning with an acorn.

Kindergarteners have also been exploring word families. We enjoyed playing a version of the card game "Go Fish" with words that end it -ot, such as pot, hot, lot, and spot. We will continue to practice reading and writing words that end in -ick and -uck.

In the folktale "The Rabbit and the Elephant", students learned about being kind and helping one another. Before reading the story, we brainstormed some things we know about elephants. After reading, Kindergarteners worked on an elephant fact book!

RI.K.2 With prompting and support, identify the main topic and retell key details of a text.

RF.K.4 Read emergent-reader texts with purpose and understanding.

RF.K.3 Know and apply grade level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

In science, students began learning about forces and energy. We spent a lot of time thinking about how seeds travel when studying plants. Seeds can travel by air, machine, water and people. We were curious about how other things move. Some things can be pushed, while other objects are pulled. Kindergarteners used their predicting skills to discover which objects in their pouches would be pulled by a magnet and which objects would not.

W.K.2 Use a combination of drawing, dictating and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic.

SL.K.2 Confirm understanding of a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media by asking and answering questions about key details and requesting clarification if something is not understood.
