Cedar Grove Friday Flash
June 17, 2022
Dear Cedar Grove Families,
It's so hard to believe we are at the end of the school year! It was so nice to have students back in the school building for a full year of in-person learning and to welcome back students from the Virtual Academy throughout the year. We have all experienced so many challenges over the last few years, but through it all, we were able to accomplish amazing things and continue to provide the best learning environment possible for your children. We have our wonderful staff and supportive parents to thank for what we have accomplished together.
Next year will bring a new leader to Cedar Grove, and Mr. Derby will be greatly missed, but we will continue to hold ourselves and our students to high standards. Your input is valuable in selecting a new principal. Earlier this month, information was sent to parents from our director about the selection process, and in that communication, there were links to the following surveys for you to provide input on the characteristics you would seek in the new principal. If you have not already done so, I highly encourage parents to complete the community survey and staff to complete the staff survey below.
In addition, a select group of staff and parents will have the opportunity to participate with our director on the interview panel. If you are interested in being a part of the selection process, please also click on the link below and complete the form.

This is the last Friday Flash for the 2021-2022 school year. To our departing fifth grade students, we wish you all the very best on your next journey to middle school. For our returning and new students, we look forward to seeing you in the new school year!
Wishing you a safe and enjoyable summer!

Summer School Lunch Free at MCPS Locations
Students in many summer school or recreation programs will be provided meals as part of the Montgomery County summer food program. The program ensures that students continue to receive nutritious meals during the summer months when school breakfasts and lunches are not available. The free meals will be served at approximately 175 sites throughout the county every weekday starting June 27 (start dates vary by site).
All children 18 and younger, as well as persons with physical and mental disabilities up to 21 years old, are eligible to receive meals. Walk-ins will be able to go to open sites for meal service. All meals offer five components including a selection of fruits, vegetables and whole grains and must be consumed onsite. A list of locations including open sites for walk-ins will be posted in the next week.

Media Monthly Update
As we come to the end of our school year, please continue checking our June, July, August Media Monthly, as it will be updated every Friday and often during the summer! Should you have any tech questions, please take a look at the Tech Tips slide deck, which is always linked in the Media Monthly, as well.
Summer Reading
We are integrating the summer reading program from the Montgomery County Public Library with our summer reading for our students! Please check out the Summer Reading Slide Show which will give you all the information you need to keep your student reading - starting with registering on Readsquared so students can track their reading. The the MCPL program will support the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's goals to increase animal habitats and plant trees with every book our students read.
In addition, to support your students, our summer media mornings will be from 10 AM - 1 PM on June 23, June 29, July 6, and July 13. Mrs. Del Balzo's virtual read aloud nights will be at 7 PM on July 8 and August 5 for K - 2 students and on July 15 and August 12 for grades 3 - 5 students. Zoom information is on the slide show and on our Web calendar. Please contact Karina Hirschhorn if you have any questions.
