A Word About Wonder

As we head into our annual Engineering Week(s) I have been wondering about the power of wondering. All humans have a "need to know"--it's wired in all of us. Childhood is a time when curiosity is at its peak, so how do we create an environment where childhood curiosity is honored and celebrated? Enter ENGINEERING WEEK! In the coming two weeks, our students will delve into engineering problems that will open their minds to questions, answers and curiosities. "Curiosity releases dopamine," a neurotransmitter that helps improve noticing and affects attention and remembering. "When your curiosity is piqued, you're going to remember things more deeply." (Wendy Ostroff, a cognitive science and developmental psychology professor) It is exciting to think that our staff will be delving into the world of connecting reading, writing, science, social studies, and math to help students make meaning and answer questions in the context of a real-world problem. We will be supporting curiosity through an "explore then explain" rather than "explain then explore" methodology. I am sure the experience will offer us the same feedback from parents that we heard last year: "What are you doing up there at Southside? My child woke ME up this morning because he was so eager to get to school and be an engineer!" I trust that the weeks ahead will be full of excitement, learning and WONDER for you and your students. Take time to breathe, step back and enjoy the impact of lasting learning!

SCPS Personalized Learning Sessions: Friday, February 12

Even if you have "your hours" for professional learning, you can attend sessions of your choice on Friday, February 12. There will be time availabe in most workshops sessions to apply new learning to your plans/classroom. Many have been interested in expanding kowledge of using Schoology to personalize learning--there are sessions on that with SCPS digital learning coaches! The following Southside leaders will be leading sessions: Robyn Marcum, Eddie Raidt, and Krista Hardesty!

From Adam Watson, SCPS Digital Learning Coordinator

Step right up, step right up! Our second annual Edtech Share Fair is coming to Southside Elementary on March 23, 2016, 4:00 to 5:30 pm. Sixteen teachers from around the district (elementary, middle and high school in several different content areas) will set up their “station booths” and give short presentations on various tools, as well as lead mini-discussions with audience members. Hear how they have integrated their edtech into their classrooms and impacted student learning.

But this is no typical PD! With Adam Watson as your carnival barker, be prepared to rotate through only the stations you select in the order that you want. So come one, come all, whether you are a Shelby County employee or are outside of the district and want to join our fun!

Be sure to use our event hashtag #SCsharefair.
