News From Memorial School November 22, 2019
As we approach the Thanksgiving break, it's the perfect time to express gratitude for the efforts of our learners and teaching staff. Progress reports will be complete and ready for printing on December 2 and in backpacks on December 3.
Our team looks forward to meeting with you to celebrate your child's growth and plan for next steps. We are grateful to partner with you to provide a quality elementary school experience for your child. We have included a piece of an article from TheLearningCommunity.us with some tips for parents to prepare for conferences. We encourage you to feel free to ask questions and make suggestions regarding the your child's experience at Memorial and as always feel free to reach out at anytime as continuous communication with families is important to us.
Follow these Tips for Parents to make your conference more effective:
- Prepare questions in advance. What groups has my child been assigned to? Is my child finishing the work assigned in class? How might I support my child at home?
- Let the teacher know if there is a particular topic you want to discuss.
- Be specific. Bring with you any work that is of concern. Describe clearly any situations in the classroom that make your child uneasy. Ask the teacher to elaborate on your child’s strengths and weaknesses. Ask to see your child’s work.
- Exchange information. Let the teacher know about any situation at home that may affect your child’s school work, such as a death in the family, a new baby, or a change in daycare arrangements.
- Take notes. Your conference may result in several actions for both you and the teacher. Taking notes will help you remember what was discussed and what was agreed upon.
- Start with a positive attitude. Don’t waste valuable conference time by focusing on the negative. You and the teacher are a team. Positive comments such as “How can we solve this problem working together?” will be the first step in coming up with good solutions.
- Support yourself. If you are not confident about your communications skills, bring someone to help. If your understanding of English worries you, bring a friend to translate.
- Discuss the whole child. Your child’s social and emotional development is as important as academic success. Include questions about her interaction with other children and willingness to participate in class discussions.
- Leave with a plan. The conference should end with a clear statement of what you will do and what the teacher will do. Schedule follow-up meetings or telephone calls to be sure the plan is working.
Progress reports will be sent home in backpacks on December 3rd. Wednesday, December 4th and Thursday, December 5th are early release days to allow for conferences. K-3 students dismiss at 1:10pm. Our team looks forward to greeting you during your scheduled Parent/Teacher Conference appointment.
Best,
Andy & Brandy

"Frozen" Themed Magical Monday in the Cheetah Cafe
We invite our students to help decorate our cafeteria with a wide variety of homemade snowflakes of all sizes for this very special event. Just follow these simple steps to participate:
- Have your child create a snowflake to be hung in the cafeteria
- Bring the snowflake to their teacher no later than the start of school on Monday, December 2nd so that our volunteers have time to hang them before the first lunch wave
- Plan your "dress for dinner" outfit for this very special luncheon
- OPTIONAL: Have your child write or draw a picture of a Magical Winter Wish they have
- OPTIONAL: Consider joining us in the cafe on the 2nd as a volunteer
