Claxton Fall Carnival Volunteer Sign-Up & Advance Tickets
Come one, come all! Our annual Claxton Fall Carnival and Fundraiser is next Friday, Oct 26 from 5:30-8:30pm at Claxton. You're invited to an evening of fun, presented by your Claxton PTO, with bounce houses, a cake walk, food and drink, a haunted cardboard arcade, carnival games, prizes, a fear factor experience, a fortune teller, and more!
VOLUNTEERS - Please sign up at tinyurl.com/clxcarnival2018
TICKETS - Information about wristbands and tickets was on the carnival flyer that came home in Thursday folders this week. You can avoid the (sometimes long) ticket line at the carnival and pre-purchase your wristbands/tickets through our directory MySchoolAnywhere App/Website (login and go to Store). If you're not already registered, go to: https://www.myschoolanywhere.com/new-family.a5w?fam=ClaxtonElementary132090. Pre-purchased items will be available at the carnival "will-call" table. Financial assistance is available; please contact mark.ackerman@acsgmail.net or call 350-6503 before October 24 for more details about financial assistance.
Please contact Kelly Yeiser at kellyyeiser@gmail.com if you have any questions about advance tickets or other carnival-related questions. Thanks so much!
Mix It Up at Lunch Day!
Mix It Up at Lunch Day is an international campaign that encourages students to identify, question and cross social boundaries. While schools can register to host a Mix It Up event on any day of the year, millions of students around the world participate on the official Mix It Up at Lunch Day, held on the last Tuesday of each October. It’s October 23rd this year!
Students consistently identify the cafeteria as a place in their school where divisions are clearly—and harshly—drawn. So we ask students to move out of their comfort zones and connect with someone new over lunch. It’s a simple act with profound implications that we encourage educators to include in year-round efforts to promote healthy, welcoming school environments. Studies have shown that interactions across group lines can help reduce prejudice. When students interact with those who are different from them, biases and misperceptions can fall away.
This year we will have 4 Mix It Up events! In addition to the National Mix It Up Day event, Claxton will have Mix It Up @ Lunch on December 18th, February 27th, and April 24th! If you'd like to volunteer and help facilitate discussions during this event, please complete the form at this link.
The Story Pirates Are Coming!!!
The Story Pirates are coming to Claxton! The Story Pirates is a self-proclaimed “kid-centric media company and leading arts education advocate” whose actors travel the country to perform at schools. The Story Pirates also put on an acclaimed children’s podcast series where they turn kids’ original stories into “wild sketch comedy musicals”.
Thanks to our own local bookseller, Malaprops Bookstore and Cafe, our students will be treated to a live performance by this traveling two-person troupe on Tuesday November 6th at 9 am. What’s even more exciting is that their theatrical performance will be based on the popular Mr. Lemoncello’s Library chapter book series by Chris Grabenstein! Much of the show will be improvised based on suggestions and ideas from kids in the audience and will include a series of interactive games and challenges.
Claxton students are invited to purchase paperback copies of the wonderful Mr. Lemoncello’s book series by visiting this link: https://bit.ly/2q17Cpy. Here you can order copies of:
Book One: Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library
Book Two: Mr. Lemoncello’s Library Olympics
Book Three: Mr. Lemoncello’s Great Library Race
A representative from Malaprops will be here at school the day of the performance to give out the books our students purchase. On top of helping bring this wonderful troupe to Claxton, Malaprops is graciously donating 20% of the total sales of the books back to the Claxton Elementary School media center! We thank Malaprops for thinking WIN-WIN-WIN: promoting reading, fundraising for our media center and offering an amazing presentation opportunity for our students!
Call for Auction Donations
Mark your calendars for the Claxton Auction on March 29, 2019. Although it’s a little ways away, we need to start gathering non-cash donations for the auction now. All money collected from the auction goes to fund PTO services, such as playground redesign, food and books for students in need, money for classroom supplies and books, mini grants, staff appreciation meals and gifts, and more.
