Decatur Middle School
Decatur Middle School Family,
We have had a great first week of November here at DMS. I continue to be DecaturProud of our staff, students and parents as we navigate this pandemic while still educating our kiddos! Teachers continue to work hard to provide high quality in person and virtual lessons! Students continue to work hard and take their education seriously as they grow and learn. Additionally our parents continue to support their kiddos on so many levels. Keep it up DMS!
With COVID 19 positive cases on the rise, this is a great time to remind everyone about the safety precautions we have in place and how we all have an important role to help keep everyone safe. Thank you to our students, staff and parents for wearing your masks while here at school. Hand sanitizer stations have been placed throughout the building, and we encourage students and staff to use these whenever possible. We continue to sanitize surfaces and social distance as we fight the spread of COVID 19. Parents are encouraged to screen students at home for any symptoms of COVID 19 and keep students at home if needed. Check out the graphic on our newsletter below for common symptoms. Thank you again to everyone for doing your part to help keep everyone safe!
Prior to Fall Break, the Marion County Board of Health allowed school districts to consider full in person instruction for middle schools. We are in a holding pattern regarding this transition. We are awaiting further clarification and guidance this week and will then determine next steps. As of right now, our secondary level, grades 7-12, will remain on a hybrid schedule. Our elementary level will remain status quo as well. Until we receive new and different guidance from the Board of Health, we will stay with our current format.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Together we are DecaturProud!

DMS is pleased to offer Virtual Care through Community Health Network to our students. How does it work? This offering is available for all secondary level students who have signed a waiver for the 2020-2021 school year. The visit is free of charge. Students can virtually visit a nurse practitioner while at school. The health services staff will assess the student and determine if a visit can be offered as there are some restrictions due to Covid-19. If you would like to have this offering available to your student, please fill out a waiver form for the 2020-2021 school year.
Indianapolis Public Library
Decatur Township has entered into a partnership with the Indianapolis Public Library. Through this partnership, every year we provide the library with a list of our students, and they match the list with their database of patrons. If a student does not currently have a library card, they will be issued one. This program has been very successful in our schools and in other districts in Indianapolis.
The special card students receive will give them access to all of the library’s digital materials, such as databases of magazine and journal articles, downloadable ebooks, emagazines and audio books. In addition, it will give them very limited access to physical items, such as regular books. Of course, you can change this to a full access card by visiting your library. This is an outstanding opportunity for your student. If for any reason you do not wish for your child to participate, please contact our school office for paperwork to opt out.
Any questions or concerns about the program can be directed to Lynn Hodgkin, Elementary Media Coordinator, at 317-856-2221.
