The arms race was the race between the U.S. and Russia to see who could build more nuclear weapons faster.
Describe
An arms race is when two countries increase their military might through manpower or technology. In the arms race in the Cold War it was mainly technology through the study of nuclear weapons.
Significance
This was important because it caused a lot of tension between the U.S. and Russia. The Cold War was a confrontation based on the arms race between the countries. It also caused a lot of stress on everybody on the Earth because the thought of a worldwide nuclear war was very real and frightening.
Facts
The arms race created a few "proxy" wars. These were wars that were indirectly fought by the Soviet Union and the U.S. These wars included the Korean War and the Vietnam war.
