STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
Super Tuesday
Tuesday, March 3rd, was Super Tuesday. Super Tuesday is the day when the greatest number of U.S. states hold primary elections and caucuses. People across the country are heading to the polls to vote. Students participated in Super Tuesday by running their own Mock Election campaign. Students played Win the White House, which takes them through a simulated primary debate, primary process, and 10 week road to election day! Students had to choose a political party, current issues to talk about, and a campaign slogan!
"Caillou, chef cuisinier"
Honors 8 students after learning about kitchen vocabulary and chores, the students watched the film, "Caillou, chef cuisinier" in which Caillou and his family spend a Friday evening making pizzas for dinner. At the conclusion of the short film, the students collaborated in pairs and created directions on "How to Make a Pizza" from Caillou's perspective. The students needed to be insightful to make sure that their "rules" were in the point of view of a child and include as many kitchen vocabulary words as possible as well as evidence/examples from the film. Overall, all of the students did a wonderful job and had fun creating these lists! Bravo, mes étudiants!
"Just another day in Science Class"
Students completing station activities to learn the Physics behind Newton's First Law of Inertia. An activity where students "do" to learn words of Physics including momentum, force, types of friction, acceleration, projectile and centripetal force.
Singing, "Je suis une pizza"
Students in Mrs. Baird's Fundamentals 7 class watched an Edpuzzle about a song they have been singing in class - "Je suis une pizza" - to review vegetables and respond to a series of interpretive reading questions to demonstrate their comprehension of the song. It was a fun way to assess understanding.
CLIMATE and CULTURE
Book Madness
During the month of February, Fernwood 6th grade classes were introduced to an upcoming event called “Book Madness”, an event modeled after the NCAA “March Madness” basketball tournament. During lessons, the students filled out brackets for which of the 16 books they felt would move on during 4 rounds of voting beginning on March 2nd. Each week a handful of books will be eliminated as students vote on their favorite books until only 1 book remains that will be named the “Fernwood Book of the Year.” This year’s contenders are: Wimpy Kid, Middle School the Worst Years of My Life, Wonder, Brave, Sisters, Prisoner B-3087, Ghosts, The Lightning Thief, Baby Sitters Club, Ghost Boys, Guts, Harry Potter, Sunny Side Up, Amulet, Hunger Games, and Drama. May the best book win!
New Week New Instrument!
Mr. Ehrhardt again shared his gift of music with Mrs. Stevenson's Social Studies class. This time he brought in his saxophone to help finish out our unit on Black History Month. He introduced us to pieces of music from famous African American musicians and composers. It was an amazing lesson where the kids got to experience live music and learn about jazz of the late 20's and 30's. He taught the class about scat singing, the meaning of songs and how they connect not only to African American history, but also to the feelings of the time period. Thank you for the important lesson, Mr. Ehrhardt.
Fernwood's Teacher Pet of the Year
Fernwood Student Council is hosting our annual teacher’s pet competition. There are fun, decorated jugs of dogs, cats, a snake and rabbit in the cafeteria, where students can vote for a teacher’s animal by putting coins in the jugs. The winner will be the teacher that has gained the most money. All proceeds from this contest will go right back to improving sound in the auditorium. The competition began on March 2nd and will run through March 12th.
