Fixed Mindset
- · when an individual believes that their traits or attributes are established since they are born and tend not to explore other aspects within their reach because they feel pessimistic about trying something new.
Ø Example: A student applying for the university, such as Southern Methodist University, they have chosen the school because it is one of the top colleges that have a great academic rating. The student applies to the school however; they are required to write an essay about why they should be considered and what they will contribute as students. They spend a week writing the essay and making revisions before the due date and submitted. After a week they receive a letter telling them that they are not accepted at the time. The student then feels as if the essay that was submitted was not good enough and should have done more revisions. They believe that the school committee is right and that their work was not good enough and he/she are not good enough to attend the school. After that try the student won’t try again since he/she did everything they could. (226, Dweck)
Growth mindset
when an individual believes that they can learn something new without feeling pessimistic but instead has a positive outlook about gaining knowledge without fear of feeling like they have failed. Instead they continue to work hard to achieve a goal that they have set whether it is in the short run or long run.
Ø Example: Let’s take the same situation a student applying to Southern Methodist University they wrote their essay and sends it to the schools admissions office. He/ she receives the letter of rejection the student feels upset however he/ she is not discouraged and takes a copy of their essay to their English professor in high school the professors makes comments on some of the errors that the student might have made and encourages the student to reapply next time mean while the student should consider going to community college to get a few course credits in before being accepted. The student accepts the new option and feel that being accepted will be a challenge instead of a rate of his knowledge.(227, Dweck)
Fixed versus growth mindset
- Motivate student to be curious by questioning them about a subject or event. This will allow students to be motivated to research a subject if interested provide extra points to motivate students.
- Praise students to keep them motivated before giving a praise think before you speak. Example: Fixed mindset : avoid giving a fixed mid set praise such as “ wow, you must be really great at this!”
Instead give a growth mindset praise such as “ you must have studied really hard because it paid out good job. Keep up the good work !” This will allow students to keep trying really hard and work for a better grade without feeling pressured.
Encourage students to be risk takers. Allow them to answer without making them feel like they are wrong and allow others to give their opinions to create class discussion.
Allow students to , for example keep a journal, this will allow the student to feel as though the professor cares about what they think and connect with the teacher at a deeper level.
Award students to a party or field trip after an exam or stressful week to keep them motivated to continue going.
