Your Path Beyond High School
Happy Holidays!
Well, it's that time of year again! College application and acceptance time! This is a busy time of year for all of us - running around getting last minute gifts, cooking, shopping, visiting friends and family. It is also the time where our Senior students who have applied early action to college, are starting to hear back from their schools. If you have received an acceptance letter, please bring it to the Counseling Office so that we can share your success!
This newsletter if chock full of info so grab a cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate, and catch up on the latest college info. I wish you and your family the most wonderful of holiday seasons! See you in 2019!
Seniors: What Should I Be Doing Now?
-Begin searching for scholarships. Begin checking the scholarship page in Naviance and check there regularly for new additions to the scholarship list (see below for newly added scholarships). Just as with college applications, if you need something from a counselor or teacher for a scholarship application, please make that request at least two weeks in advance of the deadline.
-Complete the FAFSA. This is the place all financial aid starts. Make sure that you have added any schools that you are applying to in the FAFSA. In order to access any MD money, your FAFSA must be done by March 1st and include at least one MD school in your FAFSA list. http://www.fafsa.gov or download the myStudentAid app (iOS or Android) and fill it out from a mobile device.
-Create an MDCaps account. To those who have completed their FAFSA's, the MD Higher Education Commission will begin sending out notifications to students who are eligible to receive the Guaranteed Access Grant for the 19-20 academic year. https://mdcaps.mhec.state.md.us/MDCAPS/login.aspx?c=-8586565387562627690&ReturnUrl=/MDCAPS/int/FinAid/index.aspx
Juniors: What Should I Be Doing Now?
-Review your PSAT scores. You spent an entire morning taking the PSAT, but it only really helps you if you take the time to carefully review your answers in order to do better next year. Scores not up to par? Start practicing for the SAT on Khan Academy. Students who practiced for 20 hours, were able to raise their score on average by 115 points! https://www.khanacademy.org/sat
-Beef up your resume! Start the new year by joining a new club or volunteering in the community! Colleges want to see that you are actively engaged in your school and surrounding community. (See below for a list of clubs here at PHHS)
