School Newsletter - 25 August
Endeavour School - August 25th, 2022
Principal's Message
This morning I had the privilege of hosting one of our Transition to School visits (T2S) with some new families. It is always nice to be a part of this process, meet new people and share with them more about our school, our beliefs and principles around learning, our Kaupapa. One part of the session led to a conversation around competition and the growing nature of competition in education.
We often compare our children against other children, it is a natural thing to do, how are they tracking, how are they 'stacking up' against their peers, ultimately the driver is our desire for our children to be doing well and be set up for success. Healthy reasons.
When it comes to education the healthiest type of competition is the one against yourself. As essentially, by nature competition results in a winner and a loser and I do not see any great societal benefit in having losers in education. We must aspire to a win/win model. One child's success in learning does not come at the cost or comparison to another's, they simply are not competing. As parents ( I include myself in this) we must develop our children's efficacy around learning with benchmarks they can relate to and that sit within their zone of proximal development, not around other external factors that are beyond their control i.e: how their peers are going.
At Endeavour I am proud in how we deliver on this belief, with our focus being on each child's needs, talents, goals and aspirations. It is what ensures that as educators we know your children individually... their personal story.
I feel this quote below from Seth Godin sums it up well...
We often point to competition as a tool to bring out the best in people.
You will run faster or work harder or fight more ferociously if there's someone breathing down your neck or a record to be broken.
The problem with competition is that it takes away the requirement to set your own path, to invent your own method, to find a new way. When you have competition, it's the pack that decides what's going to happen next, you're merely trying to get (or stay) in front.
Competing with yourself is more difficult, requires more bravery and leads to more insight.
Finally, as we meet the mid way point of Term 3 I am consistently encouraged by the tenacity and energy of our children. They certainly ensure our school remains a vibrant place to be.
Warm regards
Geoff

School Photo Day - Friday 2nd September
All students will now have received an information flyer about school photo day which will be happening next Friday, the 2nd of September. Please check your child’s bag for this. If this has not made its way home to you please feel free to pop into the school office to pick up another one.
Each student at Endeavour School will have a portrait photograph taken of them, as well as an Ako Group/ class photograph. A few weeks after the photos have been taken, your child will come home with a Photo Shoot Keycode. This is an individualised code that will bring up your child's photographs on the Photolife website. This is the only way to view your child's photos - without this code no one else can view these.
All photo orders MUST be completed through the Photolife website. There will be instructions on how to do this attached to your child’s Photo Shoot Keycode. Orders will be delivered free of charge to Endeavour school when ordered before the Free Delivery Expiry Date which will be outlined in the instructions.
Endeavour School is only the facilitator for this outside agency and is unable to process any orders or accept any money on behalf of Photolife. If you have any issues regarding your child’s photographs or online orders and payments - please contact Photolife directly (www.photolife.co.nz / 0800501040)
If you have more than one child at Endeavour School and would like Sibling Photos, please fill out the Sibling Photo form on the back of the information flyer, or you can pick one of these up from the school office. This can be taken home to fill out or completed in the office. These need to be returned to the school office before the school photo day on the 2nd of September.
Unfortunately, we will not be accepting Sibling Photo requests with children that do not currently attend Endeavour School.
PLEASE NOTE: THE OFFICE STAFF WILL NOT BE ABLE TO FILL OUT THESE FORMS ON YOUR BEHALF OVER THE PHONE - they require your signature.
The generalised structure of the day will be that our LC1 and LC2 Ako groups will start the day - followed by LC3, LC4, LC5 and LC6. There is not a specific timeframe that Photolife will be following and some Ako groups from other year levels might go at a different time time - the photographer will simply be moving through as quickly as possible, and as such, we are not able to move classes around if your child has an appointment.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.
Kindo
