The Construction of the Colosseum

The Colosseum was ordered to be constructed in 70 A.D. by the emperor Vespasian. It only took 10 years to build something so big. Vespasian didn't live to see the end result of the construction, but his son did. When he did he ordered a festival with 100 days of games.

The Games of the Colosseum

Two of the most popular games that were played were the Hunt and Gladiator battles. The Hunt were battles between animals like elephants, lions, and tigers and warriors. The Gladiator battles were fights between prisoners of war, slaves and people like that. Other things that were in the Colosseum were theater plays and chariot races.

The Architecture of the Colosseum

There were four stories of the Colosseum. Each story consisted of exactly 80 arches. Also the seating was put together so that it held 75,000 and everyone could leave in under 15 minutes. It was believed that it had a system of drinking fountain. Many stadiums today take after the Colosseum.

The History of the Colosseum

After hundreds of years in use the Colosseum it was finally abandoned. Over the time two thirds of the ruin was completely destroyed. Before the vegetation was cleared there were of 80 species of plants growing. Now the Colosseum is one of the most visited ruin in the world.
