Social-Emotional Learning News
News on SEL Activities, Events, and Training! #3
Week of October 18th, 2021
Happy Mid-October Folks!
Wow! Our days are feeling a little more like fall, and the slow pace seems to be gone.
I am hoping that everyone is receiving and reading through the information in this newsletter as well as on the Cougar CARES website - cause we are rocking and rolling with SEL in Crosby ISD!
As you may (hopefully) know by now, Social Emotional Learning is beginning to be a focus for our adults and students. One way we are including SEL is through "HEY! Day" Every Wednesday!! Our HEY! Week was SO SUPER SUCCESSFUL that it has been requested by the #1 Cougar that we continue this positive wave. Wear green to support friendliness and kindness and involve your class or campus in a SEL activity during transition time, wait time, lunch time, beginning or the end of the day.
SEL is for EVERYONE!! All of our students from the PreK to Seniors NEED this. ALL of our adults NEED this! It is not "one more thing" it is THE thing that we all need to be ready to learn, to have students make better decisions and to improve overall academics, attendance and behavior.
I hope everyone has heard about and visited the Cougar CARES website by now! If not, please check it out and find out what Social-Emotional Learning is all about, how you can use mindfulness to reduce stress and anxiety, and learn what RDP is! It is loaded with important information to help you implement our SEL focus this year - 3 SEL Signature Practices!
Take Care and Read on!

HEY! Week Has Turned Into HEY! Day!! EVERY WEDNESDAY!!
Hey!
We are going to keep up this positive wave by having HEY! Day every Wednesday! To keep us unified and create that amazing energy, we will have a District-wide focus each Wednesday with some options for your campus and classroom. We will continue to WEAR GREEN on Wednesdays to promote friendliness unless noted otherwise, such as for Unity Day we will wear Orange.
Wednesdays in October will focus on these themes:
October 13th - Kindness
October 20th - Unity Day - Today We Wear Orange!!
There are so many great ideas of how to promote Unity Day at your campus or in your classroom HERE.
I really like the Unity Tree, Sidewalk Chalk Messages, and making an Interactive Unity Banner. Of course - Wear Orange!!
HEY! Makers are going to be creating the "No Place for Hate" mural in the photo below for Unity Day by collecting feathers from students at CHS!!
Here is a quick video about Unity Day!

"Lunch and Learn" format may not work for you - that's ok! I recorded it for you! Take some time to listen to what SEL is, why it is important, and how to embed it in your daily routine and teaching practices. You may be doing some of these - which is great! We can all do more!
Here is the 3 SEL Signature Practices Playbook for Inclusive Welcomes AND a Padlet with great ideas to use! Please add in your own ideas and share with everyone what works for you!

Project RESTORE Trauma Informed Instruction
This "Lunch and Learn" was about the overview of the Project RESTORE training modules from TEA that help you know more about identifying and instructing students who have experienced trauma or chronic stress, which can benefit us all!
