Gates Mills Gazette

November 18, 2022

Dear Fox Family,

On behalf of the entire Gates Mills School family, we wish all of you a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! Please stay safe and enjoy the down time. Please know that we appreciate all that you do to support our students and our school! There will be no Gates Mills Gazette next week due to the shortened week.

Just a reminder that next week we are closed on Wednesday 11/23, Thursday 11/24 and Friday 11/25 for the Thanksgiving Holiday. School will resume on Monday 11/28.

Please SAVE THE DATE for our Specials Holiday Showcase on Thursday, December 15th from 5:30-6:30 pm. Come and see all of the wonderful things your children have been working on during their specials block. You will also have a chance to visit the Scholastic Book Fair.

Please feel free to call our office at (440)995-7500 or email me at if you need anything.

Keep Smiling,

Laurel Ravida

Principal, Gates Mills Elementary

With the cold weather approaching I just wanted to remind everyone of our outdoor recess policy. Students go out for recess unless the temperature is below 20 degrees or the wind chill is below 10 degrees. Students may only stay in for recess with a doctor’s note. Please make sure your child brings a coat, hat, gloves, boots, and snow pants each day (when appropriate). All items should be labeled with your child’s name. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately so they can stay warm during outdoor recess.

Get Ready! The Scholastic Book Fair is coming our way (YAY!). Choosing their own books empowers kids and inspires them to become Bolder, Prouder, and Stronger Readers. AND—as always—every book they buy earns rewards for our school.

Here’s what you need to know about the Fair, which will take place from Monday, December 12th – Friday, December 16th at Gates Mills Elementary School. Each classroom will have the opportunity to shop at the Book Fair during school hours.

  • Monday, December 12th: 5th Grade 9:00 am
  • Tuesday, December 13th: 1st Grade 9:00 am & Kindergarten 10:00 am
  • Wednesday, December 14th: 3rd Grade 9:00 am
  • Thursday, December 15th: 2nd Grade 9:00 am & 4th Grade 10:00 am

This year, say goodbye to cash and hello to eWallet—your child’s digital payment account.

Before the Fair, set up eWallet for worry-free, cash-free purchases.

Visit our Book Fair homepage to learn more and get started with eWallet and online shopping:

The countdown to more Bookjoy is on! Catch you at the Fair!

Gates Mills Elementary School is proud to partner with the Cleveland Clinic to help spread joy and cheer for those in need! Please consider participating in a virtual toy drive by donating a toy or providing a monetary donation:

RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus)

I am sure you all are aware of the recent spikes of viruses hitting our youth. We are asking for your help and diligence in slowing down the spread of illness. For latest updates, be sure to follow reliable sources like the CDC.

You should observe your child for the following symptoms: runny nose, nasal congestion, poor appetite, irritability, coughing, sneezing, fever, and wheezing. If your child has these symptoms, we urge you to keep your child at home and to contact your doctor for advice.

Incubation period of RSV: 2-8 days. Usually 4-6 days

Contagious period of RSV: 3-8 days, depending on symptoms

RSV is spread through direct contact with droplets from the infected person spread from sneezing, coughing or talking.

Should your child develop RSV, he should remain at home and please ask your physician for further advice.

Along with RSV, we are still experiencing cases of COVID and the flu. Please have plans in place for when students need to remain at home. We appreciate the help and support!

If tests are pending for COVID, flu, and RSV please do not send the student to school.

We have also included Mayfield Guidelines of when to keep a child home from school to help in the decision make process.

Thanks for your understanding!
