What is your team all about?
Our team has been working on racial equity since 2014 when we received funding from Asheville City Schools Foundation and a recap of that work can be found here.
This year, we are self-funded with the support of Claxton administrators and our fabulous Claxton PTO. Our team felt strongly that we need to carry the momentum of our work on and were able to build a bigger team to create sustainability for our school in order to make sure we have socially just and culturally responsive classrooms. We strive to grow our work with trust in each other, the process, and ourselves that will see us through any imperfection to a place of deeper understanding and respect for all.
We will continue to measure our progress by the changes we see in ourselves, and the whole Claxton staff, and the impact those changes have on our students.
- One full day workshop for new staff and faculty to introduce the content, language, culture, and framework of racial equity at Claxton and one half day workshop for all staff and faculty, reviewing and renewing racial equity concepts and deepening the school’s culture and practices related to racial equity and to The Leader in Me. More information on staff work here.
- Four two hour sessions with Claxton Parent/Caregivers, provided training on racial equity. More information on Parent/Caregiver workshops here.
- Support Family Voices Nights to talk with our families of color and reach out to families that have participated in FV for Parent/Caregiver Workshops. More information on Family Voices here.
- Complete monthly 'booster shot' discussions at staff meetings focused around targeted disparities and leadership starting in November 2017. More information on staff work here.
- Monthly newsletters of our work with the school community, including resources and community events. Link to our newsletters here
- Launch Paideia seminars for students with a focus on racial equity and leadership for all 2-5 classrooms. More information on student work here.

Giving our students space to talk about race with Paideia seminars
This year, our goal is to provide Paideia seminar topics for grades 2-5 at least once this year.
A shout out to Claxton staff for helping with childcare on those evenings and to the Loving Neighbors community for providing a meal each night.
Stay tuned for upcoming workshops for 2017-18!
Our first session will take place on Thursday, December 14 at Claxton Elementary (time to be determined).
Stay tuned for more information from our team!

Americans Who Tell the Truth Exhibit by Francine Delany New School for Children
Students from Francine Delany New School For Children will be leading student-led school group tours of the Americans Who Tell the Truth exhibit. The exhibit will be up from September 30th until the end of October, so if that week doesn't work for some teachers, they could take their students other times.
It's an amazing resource for teachers.

Microaggressions Training by Buncombe Partnership for Children
During this workshop, we will examine the brain science behind bias, how our implicit associations frame the way we view others, and how these biases show up in our daily interactions. We will also examine helpful tools and strategies that can help us address microaggressions in the classroom, with our peers, and in our community.

Dia de Los Muertos Event at the Salvage Station
Dia de los Muertos recognizes death as a natural part of the human experience, a continuum with birth, childhood, and growing up to become a contributing member of the community.
