School and Student Attendance Goal
1.) Each child will receive a monthly attendance punch card from the office. I'd like to ask for your help in ensuring these cards are put somewhere safe each day. My thought is that one responsible student in your class could be given the classroom job of "punching" each of your students' attendance cards for each day they come to school. That way, your students can see their progress as the month goes on. I will make sure each month's punch card reflects the actual number of student attendance days each month to reduce confusion due to days off, institute days, etc. Each month, students who have perfect attendance will receive a special plastic reward tag to add to a chain for their backpack.
2.) The office will be calculating each classroom's monthly attendance. The goal will be set at 95% or more. Each class that reaches this goal will receive a special bulletin board piece to put on the bulletin board by the music room where each classroom will be represented. I will be rewarding each class that reaches or exceeds the 95% attendance goal each month. By the end of the year, the graph will show the class(es) that have met this goal most consistently, and those classes will also be rewarded in May.

Evaluations
Please send Michelle THREE google calendar invites for each of your formal observations: one preobservation date/time, one formal observation date/time, and one post observation date/time. You can do this by creating an event in your own Google calendar, and following these instructions:
- On your computer, open Google Calendar.
- Go to the date(s) you would like to schedule your meetings/observations. Hit the plus sign in the top right corner.
- Enter in your name and purpose of meeting in the title, (i.e. "Dawn Smith, pre-observation meeting")
- Make sure to set the time the event will start and end.
- Make sure the correct calendar is chosen.
- Scroll down and go to Invitees.
- Enter my email address: michellehetrovicz@bighollow.us
- Hit Add in the top right corner. The event should appear in your calendar and I will get an invite.
Tenured staff on the evaluation cycle will be observed formally at least once this year. Tenured teachers may request an additional formal observation if it is desired. At least one formal observation needs to be complete by March 1st. Summative evaluations for tenured staff need to be complete by May 1st.
Nontenured staff will be observed formally at least twice this year. If additional observations are necessary or desired, they may be conducted. The first formal observation needs to be completed by December 1st. The second formal observation needs to be completed by February 1st. Summative evaluations for nontenured staff will be complete by March 1st.
Informal observations will continue as well and will be used to complete the end of the year summative evaluation for all staff on the evaluation cycle.
Here is a document you could use to help plan your observations and lessons. **Make sure to create a copy before editing!!
Jeans Days
However, if you'd like a second jeans day, you may donate money to the charity that we choose and wear jeans on Wednesdays as well. Please remember that the other days of the week, (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday) we should be dressing professionally. (Please avoid wearing jeans). Thanks.

Sight Word Games
Add an Ending – The students take out their notebooks and add suffixes to all of the
possible words on the word wall.
Around the World – Students sit in a circle. One student stands behind another student.
The teacher flashes them a word. Whichever student says or defines the word first moves onto the next student. The student who makes it back to their own desk first is the winner.
Ball Toss – With students in small groups, have the first student share one thing they learned
about a particular word on the word wall, then toss the ball to another person in the group. That student shares something different and so on.
Charades – Students act out words from the word wall and guess which word is being acted
out.
Erasing Relay – Write two columns of words from the word wall on the board that are about
the same level of difficulty. Include as many words on the board as there are students in the relay. Students are divided into two teams. Taking turns the student points to a word and if they can define it, they get to erase it. First team with all words erased, wins.
Guess my Word – Students create a list of clues for one of the words on the word wall.
Taking turns, the students read their clues, one by one, seeing if the class can guess their words.

These projects will most likely be completed over holiday break. Be on the look out for these amazing additions to our learning environment! So exciting!

ELA Curriculum/Resource Adoption & Balanced Literacy/Thinking Maps Roll Out
We know that many of you get together and plan over the summer and we wanted you to have these documents which include the Thinking Map roll-out as well as the Balanced Literacy time-frame. These documents will also be reviewed with you in August. Click here for the balanced literacy plan and click here for the Thinking Maps plan.
Curriculum resources for this year
Although we will be using a balanced literacy model, I wanted to communicate clearly the required resources for next year.
ELA - Schoolwide Units (2nd grade to supplement with Open Court Phonics)
Social Studies- Schoolwide Units used to support Illinois Social Science State Standards
Math- Eureka Math resources
Science- Mystery Science, amongst others, as a resource to support Disciplinary Core Ideas (Illinois Science State Standards)
SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING- Second STEP and Calm Classroom -
(Please review the SEL standards and performance descriptors here.) Each of you will have one day per week when you will only have PE as a special. I suggest scheduling your SEL lessons during those open days/times that you don't have a second special. Lessons for Second Step are 30-40 minutes and should be conducted once per week. You MAY group up with another class and conduct the lessons together. Materials are on order and the lessons are very easy to conduct! If you require assistance from Donna or Sarah, please schedule the lesson(s) with them in advance.
More information will be shared soon regarding required word work & word wall expectations/resources for next year.
