Happy New Year!

"It is never too late to be who you might have been" - George Eliot

I'm sure most of you have at least thought about a new year's resolution for 2022. Whether you are hoping to try something new, or reset a resolution you have tried several times before, efforts towards self-improvement can be exciting and also frustrating. Studies show that just 19% of resolutions are fully realized, but don't let that stop you from making the effort1. Consider the benefits of just trying: engaging in acts to improve one's self or others can have significant impact even if you don't technically reach your desired goal. For example, Mr. Fry might set a goal to learn all 800 Providence Hall students' names by Spring Break. While it is highly improbable that he will learn and remember that many names, endeavoring to achieve that goal will help him draw closer to his students and build meaningful relationships with them.

So set your resolutions and do your best to accomplish them, but enjoy the journey and don't get frustrated when you technically fail. As Henry Ward Beecher wrote, ""We should not judge people by their peak of excellence; but by the distance they have traveled from the point where they started."

It's a good time to help your children reset and resolve also. My family will surely be evaluating our diet and sleep schedules in preparation for the transition from holidays to school days. Long periods of recreation and screen time will be replaced with routines, alarms, and reading time.

Let's go Patriots! We are going to have a GREAT 2022!

Hearing Screening Updates

Big picture

Providence Hall's Speech Department has recently finished conducting the required fall hearing screenings. We have submitted several audiological referrals and have reminded many students to remember to keep their earbuds turned down to avoid permanent hearing damage. A recent poll by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association suggests that nearly half of all adult Americans have a loved one who has difficulty hearing. Please reference the graphic on facilitating effective communication with individuals who have hearing loss. Feel free to contact if you have additional questions or concerns about your student's hearing or speech-language development.

Ms. Andersen and Mr. Pinkal engaged in a friendly competition to see who could make the most people-pleasing pancakes for the PHES staff on Friday (Dec 17th). The consensus was that they each made very delicious and impressive flapjacks.
