Greetings from the Principal
"The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don't play together, the club won't be worth a dime."
-- Babe Ruth
I think it is fair to say that baseball is a popular sport in Kansas City! One of the reasons I like baseball is that it is a team sport. Sure, you can excel in one position on the team, or be a great hitter, but to truly succeed it takes a team approach -- multiple players working together toward a common goal -- to play a game. With one quarter remaining this school year, we can help our students succeed through a team approach.
Teachers, paraprofessionals, and parents act like coaches for our novice learners to help turn students into star players! Having a 'growth mindset' also applies to learning a new concept then helping students see how that concept relates to other ideas. For example, baseball players often start young in a t-ball league where they can learn foundational batting skills before moving onto fast-pitch. When parents help coach students to work on the basics of reading skills or math facts, this helps our students when performing at a higher level in all subjects. There are few great coaches who focus solely on ability; much of the hardest work is to help develop senses of resilience and persistence. If your child has been struggling this year at mastering a skill, now is the time to coach him/her toward home base to prepare for the next 'inning'/grade! Remember, mistakes are opportunities to learn!
Yogi Berra once said, "When you're part of a team, you stand up for your teammates. Your loyalty is to them. You protect them through good and bad, because they'd do the same for you." Our teachers enjoy building strong peer relationships in classrooms and constantly work to help students use their strengths. This means applying a strength to your learning process and to take a talent and share it with others. Our staff is incredibly proud of the way our students take responsibility for their own learning, then model, assist, and encourage one another. As a part of our school-wide PBIS system, each classroom has two student names read over the intercom each week for demonstrating fantastic Falcon characteristics. Hearing the students cheer for their classmates when names are read is truly awesome!
In order to get the best results, we want to encourage our students to have a winning attitude and understand that unlike a baseball game, it is possible in education for EVERYONE TO WIN if you "Think Win-Win!" The fourth of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People focuses on the value of interdependence. How can you be happy for a friend when he hit the game-winning home run instead of you? How can we find solutions to problems so that everyone can win?
The first way is to help students focus on their own effort and progress first and foremost. The second way is to avoid the pitfalls of a win-at-all-cost attitude or comparing yourself to others all the time. Building your life based on how you stack up to others is bad news. This mentality is never going to leave a student feeling satisfied with his/her own progress or wanting to cheer on a teammate who is seeing success.
So here we are, entering the final stretch of the school year. Join our staff in coaching our most valuable players -- ALL students -- to gain new skills, to develop the capacity to overcome difficulties, and to leave the field with a positive feeling and confidence.
Make it a great week!

Riverview Site Council Survey
Dear families,
Riverview Elementary is a place where each staff member is dedicated to helping students reach their full potential. There are many groups of individuals working together toward this common goal. Collaboration occurs within grade-level teacher teams, technology integration and literacy committees, our wellness committee, MTSS and ELL service provider teams, the building leadership team, exploratory teacher teams, and efforts through our building Site Council, composed of teachers, parents, and community members.
Each year, the Site Council is tasked with creating a survey gathering parent feedback to help inform the building's goal of continuous improvement, and determine to what extent Riverview Elementary is carrying out its mission for which we all strive. Your response to this survey is helpful in providing a sense of what is working well, and what may need further examination.
I encourage all families to complete the survey between April 3 - 13. Thank you for your participation! It is greatly appreciated.
