Starting a Rock Collection
Who Needs a Shovel?
Dry vs. Wet
Students worked in cooperative groups to look at the properties of rocks when they were dry and wet.
Searching
Students looked everywhere on campus to find five different rocks to compare and contrast properties.
What did we learn this week?
Math: Students continued with math rotations, as well as prepared for the 100th day of school. Students also participated in Round 2 of the Continental Mathematics League.
Social Studies: Students worked on biographies and poems.
Science: Students continued learning about rocks and began their own rock collection. They explored the playground and surrounding areas to find as many different types of rocks as possible. Using their knowledge of properties, the students classified the rocks and began sorting them based on the different properties they observed. Students had to create a mystery sort and had Ms. Kennelly and I try to decipher their sort properties!
Literacy: Students worked on biographies and poems.
Writing: Students worked on biographies and poems. Some students began working on their speech.
Taking Advantage of the Weather
After completing our science lesson on Tuesday, students enjoyed racing Ms. Kennelly across the field!
What's Ahead?
Math: Students will continue with math rotations, Rocket Math (fact fluency practice), Number of the Day problems, and Number Talks.
Social Studies: Students will write their speeches and begin to practice.
Science: Students will review the different properties of rocks and read science texts about rocks to deepen their understanding. Students will use the texts to answer thought-provoking questions that require using evidence to support their answers.
Literacy: Students will begin preparing for literature circles.
Writing: Students will write their speeches and begin to practice.
*New spelling words come home on February 25!*
*Please help your child rehearse for the Flat Stanley performance. I will email you a copy of the script.*
