Eagle's Nest
The official e-newsletter of Corona Elementary
February 1, 2022
Dear Parents,
If you were to gauge our school year by what you see and read below my message, you would not have any idea that we are in the midst of a global pandemic (expect for the part about Covid testing). : ) The Corona team is truly working hard to accelerate learning and to provide students as many extra-curricular activities as possible. From after school soccer, coding, robotics, Spelling Bee, awards assemblies, homework hotline, Valentine’s Day grams, Kindness Week, Saturday School, and much more, we are finding ways to connect our students to a positive learning experience. Please continue to believe that your child’s best interest is at the forefront of all decisions that are made on a daily basis here at Corona Elementary and in the Ontario-Montclair School District. Know that we believe in you and your child, and truly value the essential partnership that will continue to help our community grow!

Ms. Mayra Gomez
Teacher, Resource Specialist Program
Hello. My name is Mayra Gomez. I am Corona’s Resource Specialist Teacher. I earned my Bachelor's degree in Political Science, Mild/Moderate Special Education Teaching Credential, and Masters of Education degree from the University of California, Riverside. I’ve been teaching for 8 years and really enjoy working with students with special needs. Before coming to OMSD, I taught at Riverside Unified and Pomona Unified School District. I also had the opportunity to teach English abroad in China back in 2016.
I was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, but grew up in the Coachella Valley. I am the youngest of 5 daughters. My parents are hard working people who immigrated to the United States to give our family a better life. I’ve been happily married for 4 years. My husband is a Spanish Teacher at Chino Hills High School. We love traveling and have visited 8 different countries together.
During my free time, I enjoy traveling, watching Dodger baseball (shout out to Mookie Betts), going to the theater, bicycling, and reading. I also love art and enjoy visiting museums. My favorite museum is the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and I am currently reading A People’s History of the United States by Howard Zinn. Some of my favorite places I’ve traveled to are the Machu Picchu ancient ruins in Peru and the site of the Aztec Pyramids near Mexico City.
My favorite part about teaching at Corona is our students and families. Corona reminds me a lot of the community I grew up in and it’s a pleasure to work here. Our students are some of the most hardworking, enthusiastic, and friendly students I’ve ever met. A single piece of advice I would give to parents is to celebrate your child's accomplishments no matter how big or small. Parent support can truly make a difference in a child’s education.
Congratulations to our January Reading Counts Leaders!

February's SEL Theme
RELATIONSHIP SKILLS: Communication and Social Engagement
During the month of February, your child’s SEL instruction will focus on Relationship Skills to increase the ability to communicate clearly, listen well, and resist inappropriate social pressure. Students often find it difficult to communicate their needs in positive ways without blame or defensiveness. Yet, being able to effectively communicate how they feel—whether positive or strong emotions—and ask for what they need can open up conversation and strengthen relationships.
