2022 Mid-Year Assessment Update
South Lyon High School & South Lyon East High School
January 14, 2022
SLCS Families and Students,
We recognize the impact Covid -19 has had on teaching and learning this semester. While we acknowledge that exams are an important part of the educational process, we also recognize the need to adjust our educational process to meet the needs of our students. In making these adjustments, we have considered the following factors:
Exams are an important factor in preparing students for post-secondary education; however, we are also aware of the impact that Covid-19 has had on both our students and our staff.
There are some students that may benefit from being able to take exams to demonstrate what they have learned throughout the semester.
Some students may be able to improve their overall grade by having the opportunity to take the exams. Removing exams may have a punitive impact on the grades of these students.
We value the social-emotional well-being of our students and recognize that some students have been dealing with a lot of additional stressors this year.
We understand that extended absences due to Covid-19 have impacted both students and staff.
The following adjustments will be applied to our 1st semester exams. The exam adjustments are non precedent setting and apply to this semester only.
All students will be required to take their exams at the normally scheduled time. Students who are quarantined or have an excused absence will have the opportunity to make up the exam.
Exam grades will not have a negative impact on any student’s overall grade unless there is no attempt to take the exam.
This only applies to students who attempt to take the exam.
If a student has an unexcused absence or skips the exam and there is no attempt to take the exam, this policy does not apply. A grade of zero will be entered and averaged into the total grade.
We have provided a few examples to help students and their families understand the impact of the exam changes.
Thank you for your continued efforts to engage in meaningful learning and for your commitment to a strong finish to the semester. If you have any questions or concerns, contact us at any time.
Thank you,
Karen Fisher, SLEHS Principal
