Hallinan Elementary
Hawk Squawk 7/2/20
Principal's Message
There is a lot going on at Hallinan - the renovation is in full-swing! Although we will be able to occupy Hallinan by the beginning of the school year, work will still need to be completed on the outside of the building while school is in session. Even though other facilities may open in July, please remember that Hallinan is closed, including the field and playground, for everyone's safety. For additional information about the renovation, please see the Hallinan Renovation section below.
Due to the renovation, our school office is closed. We will have in-person office hours Wednesdays from 9 to noon beginning August 5, at Westridge (3400 Royce Way, LO 97034). Until then, if you need assistance, please contact Lee Gates at gatesl@loswego.k12.or.us
The Hawk Squawk newsletter, our primary means of communication to our families, is published every Thursday afternoon during the school year, and once per month during summer break. The next Hawk Squawk will be delivered August 6; however, the District will continue to send out information weekly. Until then, have a wonderful summer!

LOSD Roadmap for Reopening: Elementary Schools Options Recap
Thank you to all who provided feedback on LOSD's two elementary school options. Option A is K-5 students attending school every day, with 5th graders possibly attending school at Palisades or Uplands. Option B is K-5 students attending school every other day, with all grades attending their neighborhood elementary school.
Two-thirds of the respondents favor Option A. When filtering only 5th grade respondents, a majority still favor Option A. Based on the feedback, LOSD is making plans for all K-5 to attend school every day.
LOSD is working through the details and will have more information for elementary staff and students soon.
A few questions came up repeatedly:
Why are we considering moving fifth graders instead of kindergarteners to another school?
It comes down to numbers, and maximizing space in all of our elementary schools. We have fewer kindergarteners (374 students projected) than fifth graders (538 students projected); moving kindergarteners to Palisades or Uplands does not create enough space for the students in grades 1-5 to spread out safely at their neighborhood schools.
How can students move to Palisades without an innovation lab and other special rooms?
This year is very unique with students spending time at school in classrooms. We do not need to construct an innovation lab, library, music room or cafeteria. Special instruction will occur inside the classroom and meals will be delivered from the nearby kitchen at Lakeridge High School. Palisades has a secure entry and updated internet access.
Why not consider constructing temporary classrooms?
Constructing temporary classrooms, such as tents and portables, is not an option for any grade level. Constructing temporary classrooms is time-delayed by at least six to nine months due to procurement/permitting and cost-prohibitive at a minimum of $300,000-$500,000 per four classrooms.
Now that we have a direction for our elementary schools, we will be developing more detailed plans to share with you soon. Please note those plans will include time for elementary PLCs and online teaching and learning days. We appreciate your engagement in making plans for reopening LOSD schools next year.
The Hallinan Elementary Renovation Project will bring significant improvements to the forty-year-old facility, including upgrades in safety and security, technology and seismic and infrastructure. Since our last report, the Library demolition has been completed and the Innovation Lab concrete has been poured and framework has begun, which can be seen in photos below.
