High School Registration Process
Attention 8th grade Parents: This is a very exciting time of year as we prepare your student for their transition to high school. Your Kulshan student will be participating in the high school registration process next week. High school counselors will visit Kulshan the week of March 2-6 to help students view the Course Catalog and choose classes. (Spanish version of Course Catalog) Do you have questions about high school registration? Please contact one of our Kulshan counselors with your questions. Thank you!

Due March 23: Spring Sports Registration
Is your student interested in participating in a Spring sport? We offer 6th-8th Cross Country, 7th-8th Football and 7th-8th Girls Basketball. Our registration deadline is Monday, March 23. There are 3 steps parents need to take for sports registration: 1) Final Forms online registration 2) Sports Physical 3) ASB fee. We offer the following Spring sports: Cross Country (grades 6-8), Football (grades 6-8), and Girls Basketball (grades 7-8). If you have any questions, please email our Athletics Registrar or call 360-676-4886 x4708. All practices for Spring sports begin Wednesday, April 1 at 4:00 PM. If your child has already done a KMS sport this year, they most likely have completed all three steps. Just ask your student to check in with Lisa Scott to confirm. Our Spring sport season is our largest participation of the year! We encourage your child to choose a sport and have fun! Spring sports are a great way to get to know more Kulshan students across grade levels.

Local Author Visits Kulshan
On March 19, Kulshan is hosting local author Christine Day, who wrote I Can Make This Promise. Day is a member of the Upper Skagit tribe and the book takes place in both Seattle and the Suquamish ancestral lands. This book has been read aloud and discussed in 6th and 7th grade Social Studies and Language Arts classes. We are also setting up a Village Books pre-sale prior to the author visit. You can order your own copy of the book here at this link.
Kulshan Clubs
Did you know that Kulshan has 23 clubs? Check out our list of Kulshan clubs and find a group that sparks your interest. Clubs are a great way to connect with friends and meet new friends.
Every Wed and Fri: Open Gym
Did you know we host Open Gym with Mr. Sytsma every Wednesday and Friday morning from 7:45 to 8:45 AM? You do not need to sign up to Open Gym. Just show up during this time to have fun playing basketball or soccer. Open Gym is available to all students, any grade. We will run Open Gym every Wednesday and Friday morning from January 22 until Spring Break.
Cooking and Gardening with Common Threads
Hello and happy March! This month, we completed our veggie stir fry cooking lesson and began moving back into gardening. If you’re interested in getting involved with garden lessons please contact me: ruby@commonthreadsfarm.org. If your student enjoys gardening and cooking, check out Common Threads' Spring and Summer break camps! Need-based scholarships are available. Visit https://commonthreadsfarm.org for more info. Also, did you know our Summer camp registration is open? Are you interested in joining our team? We are currently accepting AmeriCorps applications!
Did you know that April 1 is Census Day?
The U.S. Census Bureau will send you an invitation to respond online to the 2020 Census between March 12-20. Responding to the Census helps our community get its fair share of funding. Census data guides how more than $675 billion in federal funding is distributed to states and communities each year for schools, health care facilities, roads, transportation, recreation centers, social services and more. Starting in March 2020, everyone living in your home needs to be counted. That includes children and newborn babies, citizens and non-citizens, relatives and non-relatives, and even those staying with you temporarily. You can complete the Census online, by phone or by mail. Your responses are safe and secure. The law requires the U.S. Census Bureau to keep your information confidential, and your responses cannot be used against you in any way. Learn more about how you can shape your future at 2020census.gov.
Lost and Found Clothing & Lunch Boxes
Be sure to stop by KMS and grab your Lost & Found items! We have water bottles, lunch bags, coats, and sweatshirts. We recommend that parents write their student's name clearly on the outside or inside of their lunch box and clothing items. This helps us reunite students and items. Our PTSA donates Lost and Found items to local charities every 4-5 weeks. Thank you!
KMS Account at Wee Ones Reruns
We have created a consignment account at Wee Ones ReRuns (next to Trader Joes) for Kulshan Middle School. You can request that your Wee Ones proceeds go to Kulshan Middle School’s account. Our school will get the credit for the items that sell. (They will give us 40% of the sale price of each item, which goes towards our KMS PTSA.) Our account code is K945 but if you forget, they have this on file. A special thank you to parent Teddi Johnson Anshus, our Kulshan Clothing Closet Coordinator.
Now Hiring in Bellingham Public Schools!
Are you interested in any of our substitute positions? We are interviewing and hiring substitutes custodial, food service and bus drivers. We encourage you (and people you know) to apply. Please tell your neighbors, friends, and family. You are our best recruiters!
