What we are learning...

English/Language Arts & Social Studies

Students have been reading their Book Club novels. We will spend the remainder of the school year discussing and analyzing their novel.

We just finished Math MAP testing and students are creating a Mathematical Me presentation that uses math/numbers to describe themselves.

Students have been learning about health and nutrition in Science. We have been applying that knowledge to learn how to read food labels on packaged items to make better healthy choices.

Morning Drop Off

Dropping off before 7:30am. Students can immediately enter through the gym door in the front and wait with teachers and their grade level for the 7:30am bell to ring. There is much less traffic at 7:20am!

Using the additional drop off lane in the South side parking lot. This is open to all students. Teachers and student greeters will be there to welcome students every morning!

Exciting News from Mrs. Caplinger!

We have exciting news to share with you!

Barksdale is going to get a whole new look for the 2018-2019 school year! Recently the Plano ISD School Board approved the budget for refurbishment. Some of the things that you will see are full renovation of the kitchen, new flooring throughout the building, upgraded teachers’ lounge and workroom, new metal student lockers, all new cabinetry, new furniture throughout the building, fresh paint, new playgrounds, upgrades to the HVAC units, chillers, boilers, electrical, plumbing, and more. There will also be two additional classrooms added due to our projected enrollment. Construction on the two new classrooms will begin shortly. Teachers are busy cleaning out their classrooms after school and on the weekends, as everything in the entire school has to be removed starting June 1. We could not be more excited to see the new look, but we do know that we will have to make adjustments along the way. We will continue to update you throughout this process. Please know that none of this will impact your child’s learning this school year. They will begin working on everything over the summer, with the exception of the two new classrooms.

We have set up some opportunities for incentives to reward the students who engage in extra learning outside of school. We are encouraging the kids to read more books. Below you will find the prizes we are awarding for different levels of achievement.

Homework & Agenda

Please expect your child to have homework every single night. Homework is always written on the agenda in google classroom. Students and parents can both access it from home to see the weekly assignments and events.

Here is an idea of what homework assignments to expect in each class:

Reading - A Google Classroom assignment will be posted weekly. In addition to this, students will have Reading homework only if they did not finish the morning work assigned or studying for a test. Below are links to each homeroom teacher's agenda. Please use the link to see your child's reading assignments for the week.

Math - Students usually organize all their homework on Monday, and there is an assignment that needs to be completed each night. Students may work ahead if they please. Click here to see the Math agenda.

Spelling - We usually give Spelling Tests every other week.

Vocabulary - There is usually a vocabulary test every other week. We use a program called "Wordly Wise," so you may see that written in your child's agenda. A Quizlet is typically posted on the Google Classroom to help students study.

Science - Students typically do not have science homework, though they are expected to study their notebooks for occasional quizzes and tests. These test dates will be updated on the newsletter and teachers will have students write down in their agenda if they need to study.

Home and School Connection

Connecting what students learn at school to what they are doing at home helps reinforce new concepts. Here are some links students can use to practice what they are learning at school.

Lunch reminder...
