UNCG’s Jackson Library Preservation Services Staff are pleased to conduct a workshop entitled “Book Repair on a Budget” during the January 31st/February 1st PLC session. Media Specialists will rotate between two 45 minute sessions on common book repairs. One session will cover paper mending and interior hinge repairs and the other will address spine and cover repairs. Please bring two books from your collection in need of treatment with you to the training, one for each workshop session. We will focus on treatments that are relatively quick and easy to perform and that require materials you have on hand or can acquire inexpensively. A list of resources, links to online videos, and a few samples of some materials we use in the sessions will be provided for you to take back to your school media centers. We hope you will join us!

DID YOU KNOW?
In this era of “Fake News”, UNCG Libraries’ Special Collections and University Archives has developed an Community Instructional Program. This is a free program offered to Guilford County High Schools. Rather than requiring students come to us, we travel to bring a workshop to help students sharpen their skills in locating credible scholarly sources, accessing digital content and analyzing primary sources across numerous database platforms. We have found that these skills contribute to student success in both High School and at the College level. To further help scaffold existing teachers’ efforts in sharpening student research skills, we customize our workshop sessions to match unit standards, research projects, or any other subject material the class is working with at the time of our visit.
Projects of Classrooms/Teachers We Have Worked With:
- English/LA- Historical background Primary Source research of 1950s Red Scare when reading The Crucible. Primary Source research on the life and works of William Shakespeare.
- AP Research/College Writing Courses- Individual Research Topics, Finding credible Primary Sources, utilizing an Archives’ resources, Analysis tools for Primary and Secondary Sources as well as Scholarly vs. Popular Sources.
- History/Social Studies- Primary Source analysis tools, and finding credible Primary Sources. Using Primary Sources to provide background knowledge for drawing political cartoons during Jacksonian Presidency, and designing campaign slogans for the Election of 1800.
If interested in scheduling something for your classes please email Rachel Rutz at rerutz@uncg.edu
