PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Check out the IB's new parent brochure, "5 ways you could support your child as a PYP parent." For new families, PYP = Primary Years Programme, which is the name of the program your kindergarten - 6th grader participates in here at Sierra.
This Wednesday evening our wonderful PTC is holding a meeting via Zoom, details are below. I do hope you join. Every parent at Sierra is included in the PTC - there is no membership fee.
Our wonderful librarian, Mrs. Hansen, is running a VIRTUAL book fair, which kicks off this Monday. Details below. Thank you, Mrs. Hansen!
In typical years, we'd be preparing for our incredible Fall Carnival, a favorite tradition here at Sierra, which we can't host due to the public health guidelines. Without the fall carnival, we still want to have some fun! Here are two ways we are modifying some of the highlights of the Fall Carnival to bring some fun to our sharks!
1. Halloween Costumes: because our sharks won't have the chance to wear their Halloween costumes to the carnival, we are going to allow them to wear them to school on Oct. 27th or 28th for Groups A and B (K/1st teachers will email families later this month with specific details for their dates/rules). While Halloween is a special and exciting day for those who celebrate it, these are regular, instructional days at school and students will be expected to fully participate in learning and other routine school activities. Because we have students who do NOT celebrate Halloween, we will not offer any activities which would be exclusive to any of our students. All costumes must abide by these rules:
Costumes should be simple as to not be distracting, or easily lost/damaged. Please consider that allowing your child to wear his/her costume to school may result in parts being lost or damaged during regular school activities (recess, etc.).
Masks and full facial makeup are not acceptable. If worn, they will need to be removed.
Students may not wear costumes that are violent or gruesome (containing fake blood, gore, etc). This is not appropriate for school and may frighten our younger sharks.
Fake weapons such as guns, swords, or daggers may not be brought to school. If students have inappropriate costumes or props, they will be confiscated and will need to be picked up by an adult.
All students must be able to independently manage their costume in order to use the restroom, sit in class and do work, etc. If the costume is too constricting, or requires assistance from an adult to take on/off, it is not appropriate to wear to school.
2. Pumpkin Decorating Contest: We will have a virtual pumpkin decorating contest, but instead of one pumpkin per class, as we have traditionally done, we will allow individual photo submissions. Contest rules and guidelines will be released soon for those sharks who wish to participate!
Warmly,
Amy Westberg
