Academic Information
Science:
6th grade is “Rocking” in Science! During the month of October (or as we like to say Rock-tober) students will be studying minerals, rocks, and erosion. During the month of “Rock-tober” students will complete several labs working with minerals and rocks! Try to have your child explain the difference between rocks and minerals! Maybe they have a collection of their own they can tell you about.
Social Studies:
This week we started our unit on European History. In this unit, we will briefly cover a few events prior to the 20th century, and then delve in deep to WWII and the Cold War in Europe. The unit will take us through the week before Thanksgiving break and culminate with a unit test. We will be in contact when we have test dates solidified.
We began our study of history with a quick look at European exploration, colonization, and imperialism. We have investigated these events and how they had an impact on the start of WWI. We will then take a few days to discuss WWI, wrapping with an in depth look at the Treaty of Versailles and how the terms within it contributed to the rise of fascism and the start of WWII.
Reading:
October 15th marks the beginning of our 3rd unit in Reading: Working with Text Complexity. Students will start an investigation into the ways nonfiction texts are becoming increasingly complex and the ways students’ reading can shift in response to those complexities. Of course, reading complex nonfiction also involves tackling increasing vocabulary demands. Students will learn to rely on a host of strategies to help them make sense of increasingly complex vocabulary used by authors of nonfiction texts. Our unit will wrap up by students learning to read more analytically, thinking especially about the relationship between parts and the whole.
ELA:
In ELA, we are wrapping up our short story unit with a narrative writing. We are excited to use the elements that we have learned this unit to culminate the craft of our writing in a creative way. After narrative writing, we are excited to make a turn to our next unit of nonfiction texts. We will first start out by distinguishing between fact and opinion, and using textual evidence to support claims made within a text.
Math:
6On:
Students will be reviewing GCF/LCM word problems (MGSE6.NS.4a,b), distributive property (MGSE6.NS.4a,b), and dividing fractions(MGSE6.NS.1) to prepare for their unit test on 10/18. Their study guide is due on Tuesday 10/16.
We will then begin our Ratios and Proportions unit. We will be focusing on ratios, unit rate, rates, and proportions(MGSE6.RP.1, 2, 3)
6A:
We have our quiz scheduled for 10/16 and it will cover operations with rational numbers (including positive and negative fractions and decimals)( 7.NS.1,2). If students need another day they could take it 10/17 during homeroom.
After the quiz, we will be doing order of operations with rational numbers and rational number word problems(7.NS.3), then we will review for the test. The test is scheduled for 10/23.
If you ever want to see what going on in our class, ask your student to see their unit plan in Google Classroom. It includes TONS of videos, digital practice activities, and keys for any paper activity we have done. This is an AMAZING resource to use to refer back to and use to study.
7A:
We are having a quiz on Wednesday, 10/17. It will cover algebra vocabulary, properties, identifying parts of an expression, combining like terms, and the distributive property. We will then write equivalent expressions by factoring out with the distributive property. Students will translate algebraic expressions and solve one-step equations with rational numbers. Unit 2 Part 1 Expressions and Equations tentative test date is Thursday, 11/1.
6th Grade Weekly Help Sessions Schedule
Academic Help Sessions
Connections Help Sessions
Other Help Session Info
- Help sessions provide an opportunity for students to gain extra practice in a particular subject area.
- Teachers rotate who leads each subject's help session each week. Therefore, students may go to any teacher's help session, even if they don't have that teacher.
- Students must come to sessions with questions, a pen/pencil, and paper.
- For the morning sessions, students will wait in the cafeteria until they are picked up by the teacher leading that session at 8:00 a.m. Students must be on time, and they must be attentive so that they can hear when their session is called. Late students will not be admitted down the hallway.
- For the afternoon sessions, students go directly to the teacher hosting the help session after the dismissal bell rings. Students must be picked up on time at 4:40 p.m. in front of the school.
